RABBITSTAR For what it was worth, the moon was fairly quiet. While he preferred that to previous, tumultuous seasons, it still felt like treading on thin ice. In any case, it'd given them the time they needed to sort out some of the next moves for the Clan. Let's see how this goes over, he mused bitterly, leaping up for the meeting.
“All cats old enough to catch their own prey, gather around for a Clan meeting!,” they called. As he waited for the Clan to gather, Rabbitstar stood as tall and rigid as he could.
“We've had a largely quiet past few moons,” he began once he was content with the turnout, “but we can't be sure what's on the horizon. With past events in mind, including Sunchaser's parting words, we are looking for strong and loyal warriors to take up a new role. As mentioned in a Gathering a few moons ago, we're looking to introduce guardians.” His eyes swept the crowd to gauge the reaction.
“Any interested in the position should report to me or Swanmask as soon as possible. The primary role of guardians will be to defend patrols, prioritize honing their battle skills, and of course, protect the camp. Not terribly new to the life of a warrior, but I feel the specialization will make SunClan safer.” Finally sitting, he curled his long tail around his paws. “If there are no questions on the matter, then the meeting may be dismissed.” |

The news sparked Lichenshine's curiosity immediately. Specialized warriors, focused on battle skills and guarding patrols. It sounded enticing. The warrior instinctively raised her tail, ready to approach Rabbitstar as soon as the Clan was dismissed from the meeting.
Lichenshine was quick to rise to her paws and approach the leader, waving her long tail in a greeting. "Rabbitstar," they dipped their head respectfully. "I'm sure it's no surprise to you that I've approached you. I'd like to formally express my interest in becoming a Clan guardian."

Rabbitstar tilted his head, expression turning more solemn. “Now, Lichenshine, you are among SunClan's most devoted warriors. There is no doubt about that. This role will require devotion and strength, both of which I know you to possess. That said, I need you to understand: this role is meant to protect our Clanmates. Even the less... approachable among us. The very nature of being a guardian requires you to forsake the notion that they have to earn your protection.”They paused for a brief moment, hoping to let their words sink in. Rabbitstar meant what he said, of course, but even he knew how difficult that could be. Guardians had to protect SunClan cats, SunClan cats were meant to work hard... but that meant that outsiders often had a hard time feeling like SunClan cats. Especially those who joined as adults, but even Iceglow who joined as a kit often didn't quite feel like a Clan cat. A rogue in a warrior's pelt. “When performing the duties of a guardian, a cat can't afford to debate 'how SunClan' a cat may be. For these purposes, if they sleep in this camp and have not broken the most severe of our laws, that cat is a SunClan cat. Will you be able to protect cats like that, Lichenshine? The weakest and the newest among us?” It wasn't a denial of the role. Their purple eyes were trained on Lichenshine's expressions. He wanted to have faith in them, but he also knew that they weren't too different in their opinions on SunClan's laws. He knew they were both thoroughly SunClan cats, and he knew what SunClan cats struggled with. |

Lichenshine's initial pride would begin to fade as Rabbitstar spoke, her ears pinning to her skull as a reflection of that. He... doubted her? After everything Lichenshine put into SunClan, into the warrior code. Rabbitstar doubted them because they didn't live to appease the strays that waltz into SunClan whenever they liked.
They could feel their heart pounding in their chest, and Lichenshine had to silence the alarm calls screaming in her head, the shrill voice of a meadowlark escaping a warrior's patrol. It was only a moment, but it felt like a lifetime inside the raging of Lichenshine's mind. She had to stop this foolishness. They forced themself to speak. "Rabbitstar," Lichenshine cleared their throat and lifted their ears. Her moment of weakness needed to stay fleeting if she hoped to salvage this mess of a situation. "A warrior's job is to follow their leader and protect their Clan. A title doesn't change that." The warrior looked intently into Rabbitstar's eyes, hoping they'd give away his thoughts. "I'm ready."

I can't fault you for not approving of... certain cats. I just want you to understand my expectations,” they responded with a slight tilt of their head, with a quick glance at Lichenshine's pinned ears. He straightened up further to more properly meet their gaze. “I trust you, Lichenshine. There are few other cats I feel are as qualified for this position as you are. Our Clanmates will be safe under your protection.” |

For a moment, relief washed over Lichenshine, and they felt a bit of pride in their chest. "Thank you, Rabbitstar," they meowed, dipping their head to the leader. "I'll guard them with my life."
