"Hailstar?"
The adrenaline still hadn't left Pansyheart's chest. Hearing her name called at the Clan meeting, only to be met with the silent, judging glares of her Clanmates. Even her own parents seemed like they didn't know whether to celebrate. Her stomach twisted in knots as she approached her leader, apprehensively claiming the title he'd given her.
"You may enter, Pansyheart."
She enters, slowly approaching her leader. The sunlight catches his light silver fur, and Pansyheart notices how its begun to grey at the ends.
"I know why you're here."
"You do?"
Hailstar sighs before slowly turning to face her. He lifts his head to meet her gaze. "You think I've made a mistake in making you deputy. That's it, isn't it?"
Pansyheart's words catch in her throat for a moment. She sits down, wrapping her tail around her paws as if she was protecting herself from the conversation. "Well, yeah. I don't think the Clan supports your decision. And I don't know if I can stand up to SunClan the way you do."
Hailstar sighs, shaking his head. "Stand up to SunClan," he mutters, taking his gaze away from Pansyheart. "How foolish we've been. How many Clanmates did we lose in the last battle?"
"Three, sir. Petalsong, Frogwhisker, and Daisypaw."
If she didn't know any better, she'd thought Hailstar had been struck by those words. Petalsong and Daisypaw were his mate and daughter. Daisypaw, a headstrong young molly, had tried to intervene in her mother's battle against two SunClan warriors. But she had been too late, Petalsong was already too far gone, and Daisypaw died of her wounds in the medicine den later.
"I ordered that battle, Pansyheart. We were going to reclaim the southern levee. I was going to train Daisypaw there after our victory." His voice broke as he spoke, and he shut blue eyes, taking a deep breath to compose himself. "I see it now. The greatest loss of my life, and I see it now. We can't keep fighting this way. It's the innocent cats getting caught in the crossfire."
Pansyheart looked at her leader, her heart breaking as he spoke. Hailstar had always been such a strong, imposing figure. She'd never seen him look so small.
"I'm on my last life, Pansyheart. You will be my last deputy. I chose you so you could create a new direction for MoonClan."
