Of all times for everything bad to happen, did it really have to be the middle of the night?
After the shared chaos of the clan had subsided, everyone had filed off to their dens for the night. There'd been no other choice. No amount of arguing into the starlight would have made a cat stay who didn't want to stay, and a restless bunch of warriors made for very poor patrol performance. That's the excuse Tinyleaf gave when they'd bedded down together as usual, pretending that sleeping was a choice instead of a necessity when it came to the emotional baggage the Gathering had brought home with it. Fawnheart hadn't commented. Just laid down and shut their eyes.
They'd been one of the first to slip away, but it hadn't stopped their gaze from lingering more than a few times over the sliver of the apprentice's den that was visible from their position near the den's exit.
As much as he hadn't wanted to wait, there was peace in slumber. Chasing down a young cat dealing with emotions twice their size wouldn't help those feelings settle any swifter. The way they'd erupted, though... I've never seen that side of them before. It.. was like a different cat. He'd been a trainee, once. He knew that you could change quite a lot between kithood and warrior promotion. But so suddenly? Seeing Rootpaw fracture, shifting into a self totally alien to the ginger... Just how long was it building up? They hadn't known whether to spend time scared of the coming tomorrow or cloaked in the sorrow of a mentor who hadn't done their job. Somehow, along the way, they'd let Rookbriar's kit get lost in a turmoil that only Rootpaw themselves could comprehend. Something Fawnheart hadn't been able to prevent, much less mitigate.
How could they comfort them, when they hadn't even known where the change had come from? Not knowing as much was all the scarier.
So he did the only thing he could. He slept until morning.
And rose with the sun.
It was tempting to leave things be. With any other clanmate, it'd be the obvious response. But even with full dismissal from their duties- a reprieve Fawnheart would grant regardless of circumstance- a direct exchange was necessary to communicate as much. Whether Rootpaw was ready or not, they'd have to face each other. At least a little bit. Am I scared of talking..? No. That's.. not it. As the warrior padded for the apprentice's den, the truth dawned with the warming horizon. I'm.. scared to lose them. Before they even nosed the entry, they made an immediate vow.
No matter what conclusions the other had drawn, be it resentment, shame, or anything more, he would do everything in his power to fix what remained to be fixed.
"..Rootpaw?" A soft call. It could be misconstrued for uncertainty, if it weren't their normal voice at all times. They hovered by the entryway, a restless twitch to their whiskers. If he was lucky, maybe they weren't awake yet, and he'd have more time to think especially hard about what to say. But.. If I'm luckier. It's probably good if they're ready to talk. Or, um. Want to.. If no answer came, they'd readily respect the silence. A little space isn't always a bad thing.. if they need more time.

ROOTPAW& ❥ There was a heartbeat of nothing from the den. The breaths of what apprentices were still asleep after last night filled the den, but Rootpaw was tucked in tightly and pressed into the far wall in an attempt to avoid everyone he could. He was awake when Fawnheart had dipped their head into the den, and shamefully curled in a little tighter when he heard their voice call for him.
Called for them, he was forcefully reminded as Stempaw made them lift their head to look over their shoulder at their mentor. "'m up," came Stem's straightforward mew, quiet enough that anyone else still sleeping wasn't disturbed, but loud enough that the warrior could here them. There was another moment before the apprentice got to their paws, and they slowly stepped over sleeping forms and made it to the entrance. They paused a tail length away from the entrance, crouched just barely to look out at Fawnheart and the rest of camp. Even with Stempaw taking the reigns, Rootpaw's nerves took a firm hold. What if he's mad at me? What if I'm getting held back?
Stempaw gave a small sigh, taking a moment to smooth their fur before pushing out of the den, looking up at their mentor with a tired, solemn look that just barely betrayed the lingering anxiety. They were quiet for a beat before glancing away with their tail low. "I'm... sorry about last night. We- It was out of line," they mumbled, wanting to get it out of the way as soon as possible. sunclan — apprentice — healthy Rootpaw talks in "bold #eb4468" — attack in bold italic #eb4468 Flowerpaw talks in "bold #eb7444" — attack in bold italic #eb7444 Stempaw talks in "bold #44eb74" — attack in bold italic #44eb74 © Artificial_Radiance

They weren't sure what they expected. Relief, at least, came easy. Somehow, Fawnheart had already prepared themselves for the horrible possibility of Rootpaw's avoidance. Which would be especially troublesome, considering their professional relationship necessitated their constant interaction at all times, on a more than regular basis. So that much was good. What wasn't as soothing were the words that came with their emergence. An apology.
"Um." Strong start. Fawnheart blinked, slow and processing, down at the smaller cat. Apologies.. were probably in order, sure. But not to him. Or. Were they? The warrior's tail held still behind him, frozen rigid as he thought especially hard about what had happened the night prior. It had certainly been a lot.. but certainly nothing all that offensive had been aired. Not towards them, anyway. Turtlefang might not feel the same way, though, and it was true enough that things had felt a lot more stressful with the tortie having disappeared from the den in the middle of the night again. But.. the consequences of a statement, however impassioned, were not the responsibility of a cat half their age. That'd be awfully immature to consider, they thought. So much so that it felt wrong to affirm the statement, wrong to leave Rootpaw thinking any of this was anyone's fault. As his pause for thought finally thawed, time seeming to resume in the process, he blinked once more, with clarity.
"You don't need to say that." A very short, simple statement. It didn't encompass all the thoughts currently fighting for dominance in Fawnheart's head, but it was enough to kick things off. Maybe. In the same heartbeat, they gestured with their tail, now reanimated. "We should leave camp. It's.." Private. "..better." The last thing he wanted to do was have an important conversation where all of the clan could hear them. Things that were nobody's business but his and Rootpaw's. They'd had enough of their personal matters exposed already, and weren't particularly in a hurry to put on a show all over again.

ROOTPAW& ❥ Their ear twitched, only a slight hint that they didn't fully expect that response. Then again, Root was the one that knew Fawnheart best, not Stem. "... Alright, whatever you say," they mewed, stepping out a bit further into camp before waiting. Their paws barely twitched with uncertainty as they glanced from their mentor to the camp exit. What do they actually want? is all they thought on the matter, tail tip twitching.

As the apprentice emerged, Fawnheart offered only a short nod for acknowledgement before turning on his paws with the same drifting pace he approached most of his duties. This time, however, he had a certainty in his steps, gentle but directed as they carried him to the camp exit. Not so quick as to rush Rootpaw along, nor to rush what was inevitably going to be an awkward conversation.. but steady enough to remove them from the public eye sooner than later.
It was nice out, all things considered. Despite the lingering coolness from leafbare, as chilly as the atmosphere had been among the clan itself, the sun was shining through the treeline with promise of coming warmth. No matter what trials Sunclan faced, the seasons changed. The world moved on. And Fawnheart moved on, too.
They only hoped it didn't mean leaving their student out in the lurch.
There was no set location in mind, as the warrior continued the walk in silence. A place offset from patrols, probably. A place.. they would both feel comfortable. From a spring memory, the thought emerged. The stream could be nice. The slow thaw of trickling waters, muffling them from any incidental passerby, could also feel very therapeutic. It.. was the place him and Rookbriar had played around, finding sticks and stones to bring stories to life. Back when Rootpaw was still just a kitten...
They led the way to the waterside, greenery giving way to the thinner coverage of the land just before the shore. Illuminated in its own reflection, beams of morning giving the remaining slush of the water a dim glow.. it was nice. This is good.
Fawnheart pulled to a stop where his paws touched the start of rockier ground, fidgeting among the gravel with a peek to ensure Rootpaw's settlement before they began.

ROOTPAW& ❥ They followed behind, a muted anxiety making their spine itch. Perhaps the calm they felt was thanks to a bit of wonder they felt; this was still their first leaf-bare, even with the tension. The spot chosen for their conversation, however, was a different sight. It felt... homey, in some strange sense, like there was a pleasant pull to this spot. Stempaw paused their steps as they took in both sights and sounds, before slowly settling into a sit within paws-reach of their mentor. This is fine, they thought privately, before remembering they were supposed to talk and not just be at ease in the warrior's comforting presence. Not that they weren't at ease, of course. sunclan — apprentice — healthy Rootpaw talks in "bold #eb4468" — attack in bold italic #eb4468 Flowerpaw talks in "bold #eb7444" — attack in bold italic #eb7444 Stempaw talks in "bold #44eb74" — attack in bold italic #44eb74 © Artificial_Radiance
