- + - Brookshine - + - Having new cats in the Clan seemed so strange. First Firepaw, and now Pearl, who'd yet to be given a proper name as he hadn't been in the Clan long. Now Brookshine was among the cats tasked with keeping an eye on him - she'd suggested this after all. That sort of responsibility was daunting. She felt those violet and green eyes on her no matter where she was, not to speak of the observation of the rest of their Clanmates - no, she shouldn't be thinking about all that right now. She needed to focus on patrol. The change of seasons was upon them, the trees' leaves starting to redden and the wind carrying a much sharper chill. They inhaled through their mouth to enjoy the frosty sensation more thoroughly, hoping to catch more prey-scent with it. After all, they couldn't afford to lounge in the fresh sensation for very long. This was a hunting patrol after all! They had cats to feed! They shook their head subtly, then glanced at the rest of the hunting party. Privately, she hoped for one of the others to take over the leading aspect. It'd give her one less thing to worry about, but that was just what tended to happen when you were among the first to be spotted. “It's a beautiful dawn, but I hope the wind doesn't scare off any prey,” they thought aloud, hoping conversation would shake the awkward feeling from her pelt. This was not how it was supposed to go.
One moment, Tinyleaf was at their side, raring to go as usual. The next, he'd promptly been whisked off, saying something about how it'd be good for Pearl to join the patrol and get used to things. A courteous tradeoff, certainly, but one that had left Fawnheart immediately, abruptly, and overwhelmingly alone in the middle of a patrol they'd agreed to on the promise of pairing up. It was quite a ragtag group of hunters, too.. cats he wasn't especially close to, and didn't mind keeping distance from. Not for any particular reason, but just because.. why bother? Brookshine was always so on top of things that it didn't make sense to interrupt their flow.. and Pearl was brand new. As much as the loner's origins fascinated him in a secret way, it was far from enough to make him any more comfortable in the company of a stranger.
Although, to be honest, everyone sort of felt equally foreign to him when he hadn't been out on a patrol in Starclan knows how long. Although he was far from an incapable warrior, the time spent cooped up the past season almost had them worrying if they'd forget how to make a good pounce.. without Tinyleaf there to strategize with, always so perfectly in sync with one another, hunting suddenly became a daunting task. As a result, when their patrol leader finally spoke up, it was to a silent reception. Fawnheart's gaze flit momentarily over the sunny patch of their back, and then immediately lowered back to the grass, where he convinced himself he was looking for mouse tracks instead of avoiding conversation.

It wasn't hard for Pearl to tell that his presence was making things harder for the Clan, though only slightly. He wasn't as well trained in hunting as either of the cats patrolling with him due to his previous living situations, but he had the basics down. Hopefully it would be enough for him right now. He wanted to do what he could to help the Clan that let him in. It would also give a chance to show gratitude to Brookshine for introducing him to the Clan in the first place. He perked his head up at the sound of their voice. Pearl said "It doesn't feel too strong now." as he took a glance all around him, seeing if anything snuck by him while he was distracted by his thoughts.

- + - Brookshine - + - Relieved to hear Pearl after the silence offered by Fawnheart, Brookshine smiled with her sigh. “Yeah- we should take advantage of that. Um, you've never been on a hunting patrol, so this will be a first!” She glanced to Fawnheart, hoping to coax some conversation out of them. “It's been a while since you've been on one too, right Fawnheart? This will be good for all of us, then! We can just um, take it slow and do our best, right?”"I'm uh, pretty good at catching birds, so if you need any pointers on that let me know!” Oh, did that come on too strong? Her ears burnt with the embarrassment associated with boasting. “I may not be an expert, but I can do my best to help, anyway.”Why couldn't Lightmist have led this patrol? Or quite literally any other cat who knew how to lead? She/They + Single + Bi

It hadn't even occured to Pearl that taking it slow was even an option. He was trying to put one hundred percent in to the task to show he would be able to contribute to the Clan. But seeing as how Brookshine made a point, slow and steady was going to be the best approach to figuring out outdoor hunting. "I might need to take you up on your offer since I haven't caught a real bird before." He quietly told them, looking down at the ground so he wouldn't have to see if either cat was judgemental of his lack of knowledge.

All over again, Fawnheart glanced at Brookshine- and then, following the flow of the conversation, glanced at Pearl as well. There didn't seem to be much for him to say, as far as hunting was concerned. After all, busy mouths didn't catch any prey. Or, was it busy paws? It'd been a long time since anyone had scolded them... But suddenly, something did concern them, and that was the awkward state of his new clanmate. Oh... Well. Every cat catches their first bird once.. and their first everything after that. It didn't make someone any less a warrior just to be new. Being new was the natural state of the world. If there was a way to communicate as much to the former loner, he might have, but... Well. Brookshine was the one who had found him, and Pearl seemed more comfortable talking to her as a result. With little place in that dynamic, Fawnheart merely kept pace with the pair, trying not to stare at the grey cat's drooping figure as unfulfilled empathy washed over him. But, the best way to feel better... is to try, probably. In a half conscious effort to accelerate the process, he scented idly at their surroundings, searching for the familiar trace of a nearby bird.

- + - Brookshine - + - She smiled gently at Pearl. “Well, there's always a first time for everything, right? If we find a bird, I'll be glad to walk you through it,” she answered quietly. “Oh, but- I'm sure there's a way for all of us to help one another. Fawnheart, if you have a skill you want to work on, let us know, okay? I'm still a pretty new warrior, so, I won't pretend that I'm the most qualified or anything, but... well, that's the idea of being in a Clan, right? To help each other out?” Fallenpetal had said Brookshine was good at helping her family, and so she desperately hoped for it to be at least a little true here in this patrol with a quiet that was so suffocating. The scent of a nearby sparrow stopped her in her tracks, ears swiveling in the direction the scent came from in hopes of catching more signs of it. She/They + Single + Bi

The offer was a kind one, more than they anticipated, and it made Fawnheart thoughtful to consider it. Did... every warrior know how nervous he was? That's.. a little embarrassing. Once more, their gaze caught the edge of Brookshine's figure, this time landing on the soft curve of her white ear. As patient and polite as the cat was known to be throughout the clan, it felt wrong to take them up, not when it might slow the whole patrol, might scare away prey if things went wrong. I'll.. have to work hard. I'll pounce as best I can. And... be sneaky. They had plenty of practice with quiet paws around camp. How different could today be? Although they hadn't hunted in a group in quite some time, they'd caught a bird for Rookbriar and the kits just under a moon ago, even if there wasn't two sets of eyes to humiliate himself in front of, and-
A movement.
Fawnheart peeked in the direction of Brookshine's ears, now turned, and raised his perpetually lowered head up a notch to sniff in its trajectory. Some.. sort of bird. Another bird! And that's what Pearl had wanted, too. Ah, so. Maybe... I should leave it to them. Hardly wanting to disrupt an incoming hunt, not when Pearl could outflank a fleeing kill and land himself a personal victory, they shifted their ears in the opposite direction...
..Hearing a small rustle. (d12)
With one more glance to their patrolmates, they began to arc outwards, body lowering as they honed in on the mysterious sound.

Noticing the sound the others heard, Pearl perked up his head steadily to look that direction. With the growing reality that he would be hunting a live animal, he began to worry. How much would be at stake if he messed up? The possibilty was high since he never caught anything bigger than a bug before. How would he be reprimanded? The last thing Pearl could handle was having to find somewhere new to live. Starting over yet again, leaving behind people he didn't even get a chance to call friend yet; the panic was starting to settle in. He closed his eyes for a second to try clearing his head before he let his mind carry him down an unnecessarily harsh path.
With the nearby rustling and no room for guesswork, he glanced at both patrolmates in hopes they would see him and give some guidance.

- + - Brookshine - + - Seeing Fawnheart go their own way to hunt a new prey, she glanced at Pearl and dropped down into a crouch, beckoning with her tail for him to copy the movement. “Step lightly, and stay downwind,” she whispered in instruction, taking a few steps closer to the scent as an example for him. As to not scare off Fawnheart's prey or the sparrow, she couldn't afford to make very much noise. Still, she saw the tentative hops of a bird unaware of the nearby danger, foraging instead for its own meal. Distracted, perfect. With another movement of her tail and a tilt of her head, she hoped to silently ask Pearl if he wanted to try to pounce on it once they were close enough. She/They + Single + Bi + App: Leafpaw

Crouched in the gleaming dawnlight, the sun spilling over the open fields cast all its grasses in a beautiful, golden glow, creeping closer and closer over the horizon with each passing pawstep Fawnheart took towards the direction of the sound. Without the pressure of blue eyes slipping back towards him, the sway of a thick grey tail at the corner of his gaze, it became so much easier... to let anxiety slip away. Leaving Brookshine and Pearl to their own devices, his slinking grew less skittish, the placement of their paws growing more confident as they took on the posture of a trained hunter. I always have been, they reminded themselves, focus honing in on the twitch of nearby vegetation as his green eyes hardened with certainty. I'm.. gonna do this!
Sure now of his tracking, Fawnheart's motions halted as they pressed that fraction lower to the earth, tip of their tail twitching in anticipation while he managed to hold the rest of himself rigid. There. A little distance away, no further than a good pounce couldn't take them, there was a small creature foraging in the brush. Out here in the more open grounds, it could only be something as small as a mouse, no bigger than an adolescent rabbit who hadn't gone to burrow yet. But then, parting their jaws to take in the scent, there was the unmistakable hint of something feathered. A little bird, then? That could work. (d19)
But they'd only have one shot before wings would take it somewhere beyond any hope of a second chance.
Ears tilted in statuesque concentration, Fawnheart waited for the next sound, the next shift, the next little vibration that would give way the exact spot he'd aim for in the accompanying leap.
