"Anyone home?" A pointless question. He already knew.
The source of the monotone drifted in from the entry to the leader's den, where Turtlefang lingered quietly like a shadow, stretched just as tall when compared to the stouter figure of the cat contained deeper within. The light at his back cast his expression into shaded obscurity, but it wouldn't have made much of a difference. There wasn't much to read into, when it came to him, ever guarded even in the face of perhaps his closest acquaintance. It was an awkward status to confess to himself, seeing as how infrequent these little visitations really were, but it wasn't as if he'd go out of his way to chat with many other clanmates. Standing where he was, looking in on a world he could never understand, it truly felt at times that maybe he didn't understand Rabbitstar at all, not even when he stood up on a podium and let his feelings seep through the cracks for all the clan to see. Because emotions didn't amount to much, for either of them. Rabbitstar had to be Rabbitstar, and Turtlefang had to be Turtlefang, and grief on display only told half a tale.
In the midst of all Sunclan's chaos, it had occurred to him that perhaps being leader- being on display- only made you that more obfuscated. It made communicating like this all the more important, from one loner to another. After all, unlike him, Rabbitstar hadn't volunteered for this solitude. It was bound to be harder on a cat unaccustomed to his station, however long they'd had the time to adjust. Putting tabby stripes on a tortie didn't make them any less brindled.
"Spare a second for your loyal subordinate?" The blank tone slipped, an edge of dry banter fraying its seams.

✧・゚: *✧・゚:* Rabbitstar *:・゚✧*:・゚✧ A brief chuckle gently emanated from Rabbitstar's chest. He approached the darker tortie, gesturing into the den with his curled tail. “I'd gladly afford some time to see a trustworthy cat,” they mused. “Why don't you come in, Turtlefang? Get out of the eyes of the Clan for a moment, away from prying ears. I imagine whatever it is, you don't want to be interrupted.” What a strange facet to the nature of the leader's den. A place for discussion of important Clan business, to be informed of the going-ons of the Clan, to have private meetings with highly qualified cats - while still being where they were meant to lie down for rest. A strange notion. After all, the warriors' den was almost exclusively a place for rest. Warriors didn't often go in there otherwise, there was just too much to do. Yet, now, like a medicine cat, this little private section of camp was meant for all sorts of decision making and planning. A work place. A place where cats were meant to seek him out, so that he would always be readily available. How strange. How... observational. “Well, then. What is it you want to talk about?” He/They + Single + Bi + Leader

Trustworthy. His gaze drifted, but his steps remained steadfast as he paced forward across the threshold before Rabbitstar had even finished their invitation. Quietly, silently, Turtlefang examined his leader, passing over the curled ears to scrutinize the face below with something bordering curiosity. At ease. If there was one thing he'd gathered from their prior interactions as deputy and warrior, it was that even when the other seemed to be relaxed, there was often something brewing beneath the surface. Here and now, he couldn't get a sense for whether or not that was the case, which made it all the more uncomfortable to be the bearer of bad news. But then, since when had he ever cared about inconveniencing someone else's feelings? Don't go getting soft, now. Business didn't allow for it.
As professional as he was expected to be in the confines of Rabbitstar's workplace(?), he remained upright as he shifted to the topic of interest. "You'll recall we recently launched the premiere of our new patrol." There was no reason to shy away from his prior staring, and so he didn't bother, turning his head away from the other with unashamed nonchalance. With a still even tone, he continued, "There was a situation." No need to let anxiety seep in. His other patrol members could do that themselves. Here and now, with the smaller tom, Turtlefang spoke as if the situation had no bearing on neither him nor Sunclan, although that was certainly far from the truth with their recent record of freak attacks. Still... things had been different, this time. It's always inconvenient when a pattern breaks.
More and more, his promise to make sense of everything for Honeyflare seemed to slip further and further away. Annoyingly, like a bird who flapped free from hunting paws. What would it take to pin things once and for all?
He hoped whatever development this meeting brought would help him come to a decision. With his gaze turned away, feigning indifference like a second skin, Turtlefang wondered how much longer that'd leave him trustworthy.

✧・゚: *✧・゚:* Rabbitstar *:・゚✧*:・゚✧ That wasn't what any cat wanted to hear, but Rabbitstar appreciated the directness. Better than dancing around the subject with euphemisms and pretty language meant to make the deplorable bearable. Ears all the more alert, their face tensed just slightly with the rapt attention the news deserved. “What happened?” The question was almost monotone. Had Turtlefang caught him out and about to deliver the news, panic may have ebbed into his voice, but here in camp, in their den, it afforded the little cat a level of security. Not for the familiarity, but for the simple knowledge he hadn't heard the telltale indicators of something drastic. No wails of cats having lost a loved one, no sounds of subtle frenzy that accompanied major injury. Turtlefang himself looked okay. Whatever it was, it was surely something they could work through together. Something manageable. He/They + Single + Bi + Leader + App: Harepaw

It wasn't as if Turtlefang liked setting up the dramatics, but it was good to have Rabbitstar braced before he continued, with all the disasters that had befallen their clan recently. Pretending as though he hadn't been rehearsing the report all the way back from the meadow, he blinked thoughtfully at the sidewall, recalling all the details to mind while they remained unpleasantly fresh. An unforeseen attack, a hidden identity. A retreat, thanks to Iceglow's muscle and their clustered numbers. If it were any other time in Sunclan's history, it would mean nothing. Just another rogue repelled. But here and now, with so many tricks at play, with cats from every possible angle approaching to tug on their strings... it was just another piece in the puzzle. "There was an ambush. The cat was camouflaged in a dense mud, so we could work out no identifiable features, especially in the low light. You might imagine it made it hard to place the scent."
His report lapsed for a moment as he placed his gaze back on the leader. Gauging. "I would personally note... that they had a very large stature. There was too much chaos to note exact size, but the attacker was roughly on par with Crowflame. In a lineup, that could be something to remember. Otherwise..." With a twist of displeasure interrupting his neutrality, placing him closer to a frown, he finished, "There is nothing else to say. They were successfully repelled with minimal injury. However, you and I both know how this looks given our recent history." Turtlefang, at last, sat down with the conclusion, teal eyes fixed on Rabbitstar's own as if to probe for opinion. This wasn't like before, after all, when the other was still playing coy with information. These days, their work in tandem with each other had placed them closer together as allies than their time as warriors had prior. It gave him the nerve to tilt his head, dark ears cocked in cautious invitation. "It's impossible to place this as a connected incident for certain. But I do have some thoughts."

✧・゚: *✧・゚:* Rabbitstar *:・゚✧*:・゚✧ The news buzzed about in his mind, fighting to listen to the details through the roar of frantic thoughts rumbling in his ears. An ambush. A large cat covered in mud, scent and features masked... Their purple eyes narrowed in thought and frustration alike. “Covered in mud?” Turtlefang didn't need them to tell him about the break in the pattern, but... “... an ambush at that. How... premeditated. Tell me, then, what are your thoughts? There are a few impulse opinions, but you've had this news longer. You've been able to reflect. What have you come up with?” There was the calculating mind that Rabbitstar had become grateful for. Calm and rational, Turtlefang's insights made the night patrol seem feasible to begin with. They didn't like the pattern break. They didn't like the idea that this could be a second or third or fourth party seeking to sow mayhem in SunClan. By the sound of things, Turtlefang didn't like it either. “... if it comes to it, will you join Swanmask and I in a discussion about how to proceed? Tell me your thoughts first, of course, but if SunClan keeps facing attacks, we'll have to think something up for the Clan's safety. If it comes to that, I'd like you to be there, both as the night patrol leader and as a strategic, reliable mind.” He/They + Single + Bi + Leader + App: Harepaw

Me? That much seemed to catch the warrior off guard, gaze widening a notch as he took in Rabbitstar's utmost sincerity. Ah... Honestly, the way things had been proceeding so smoothly, Turtlefang shouldn't have been all that surprised. Even still, it took a beat of pause before he responded, unable to help the pleased curl of his tail where it rested beside him. "Of course." Then, ever so quick to humble, he mused, "I believe you'll more or less land on the same considerations as mine, regardless... but whatever I may provide, I will." Wouldn't want to be too arrogant in the face of the leader, not even with their compliments to cushion the smug purr resonating silent and secret in his chest. How nice it felt, in a way, to have actions pay off. To meet positive consequences.
But that would only live so long as his utility did. None too eager to draw out the conversation any longer, Turtlefang's tail now flipped to his opposite side in a smooth lash, physically signalling his transition before he began. "In regards to the patterns we've observed, there are certainly deductions to be drawn from the break. Where our other enemies were proud to declare themselves Moonclan warriors, by scent or word itself, this attacker's identity was deliberately concealed. I can consider one of two things." He pawed idly at the ground, mind drifting somewhat to. Depiction. Itching to show, somehow, the connections in his mind, laid bare upon the earth. A way to share your ideas with others.
...
"I think," Turtlefang broke from his thoughts once more, breaching memory like a seedling bursting from the suffocating underworld. "It is either a misdirect... or a definite Moonclan offense. We've come no closer to the truth than we were last moon, so I hesitate to see why an attacker affiliated with the others would need to act with caution. On the other paw, loners and rogues have nothing to lose- they can run from consequences. A clan cat is forced to live among them. So... where the other attacks remain uncertain, this feels to me like the act of a warrior. Possibly unrelated to the others, but in a worst case scenario... possibly in alliance." Brow furrowing slightly, his tone gained a bit more dryness. "Although I don't see Pansystar as the type to work with outsiders, Moonclan has never been the most rigid on clan values. Perhaps she's even being bullied around unwillingly. My more optimistic prediction is that whomever acted out has done so beyond orders, and beyond her knowledge. After all, it was a solo attack.. and what better reason to hide one's pelt than to avoid repercussions?"

✧・゚: *✧・゚:* Rabbitstar *:・゚✧*:・゚✧ ... well, he was right. The reasoning was somewhat reassuring, a justification to squish down the increasingly unfounded anxiety of enemies lurking in every shadow. Of threats of every kind surrounding their territory, ready for the ambush. Like a pack of wolves. “I agree,” they finally stated, feeling perhaps their silence was too prolonged. “Though, something that's been bothering me is that MoonClan reported deaths very much like the two warriors we lost, but nothing of any other attacks. Why would outsiders attack both Clans in symmetry like that to begin with? What is there possibly to gain for outsiders?”His tail, almost of its own volition, thumped against the ground a few times, quickly. Tactile frustration. “If the attack on Fallenpetal and Honeyflare was indeed part of the same effort, why only target SunClan? Why kill a SunClan cat moons prior to either incident? I suppose what I mean is, why target SunClan? MoonClan is smaller, they're certainly an easier target save for all the trees.” They tilted their head, watching Turtlefang. It wasn't as if he'd know the answers - none of them could (unless there was a spy, but there wasn't any proof of that, yet) - but pooling ideas was the only strategy they had right now. “There's something amiss, we need to figure out a plan of some sort.” He/They + Single + Bi + Leader + App: Harepaw

He couldn't help it.
Turtlefang bit back a scoff, hackles prickling at the mention of Moonclan's own losses. I don't care about that, a whispered insistence snarled viciously from his mental recesses. Who cares if a few Moonclan cats bite it? Irrelevant lives with irrelevant context. And yet, even as he thought as much, he wasn't so stupid as to pretend it was true. Wasn't so foolish as to say as much to his leader's face. Because they were right. It had been a freakish overlap, so much so that he'd honestly foregone considering it entirely as a factor in the past few days. It was easier, all things considered, to forget Moonclan entirely. But not feasible. Not when it served as such a special clue, albeit one he wanted nothing to do with.
It was all hard to say. The first few nights after the Gathering, where D the deaths had been announced, he'd lain in his nest and considered all the fruitless possibilities. That Moonclan was lying, was hiding the very warriors they claimed to grieve in a disgusting, traitorous effort to play off their own merciless slaughter of Sunclan's more experienced members. Playing innocent, playing the victim. But Pansystar wasn't so intelligent, at least not enough to hide the shadow of a killer on her face. A known peace-lover (his fur practically peeled off at the thought in a slight shudder), she would never risk as much.
Turtlefang's voice rang as hollow as he felt.
"I don't know."
Then, with more conviction, a firmness setting into his orange jaw, he persisted. "We can only assume this is targeting Sunclan, and that the Moonclan incident somehow contributes to that cause. I elect not to address it, yet. Whatever is happening against us, someone must stand to gain. The natural assumption would be that Pansystar is getting back at us for Beestar's now late victories in territory expansion, but that has nothing to do with you. I can only imagine that this is a set-up to obliterate us entirely. Perhaps the only reason they neglect Moonclan is that the threat shelters nearest to us, perhaps on our furthest outskirts from the dividing river. It'd be safer, in that instance, to work closest to home. It's a long walk across both territories, at least."
With that, the warrior gave pause, eyeing Rabbitstar carefully. "..Perhaps we should investigate the area. Get to know our more.. eccentric neighbors." It was a riskier proposal, launching already endangered clanmates into the dangerous unknown. But what else is there than to sit around waiting to be picked off, cowering in our own dens like prey? As much as he disregarded his clanmates, clumsy-pawed and reactionary at times, they were warriors. Not mice.
If waiting only meant pushing up dirt till the next sacrifice landed hard and bloodied on Sunclan ground, there could be no more passive observation. Not without more burials to pay the price of patience.
He thought idly of Tinyleaf, always out on his hapless own, and felt his chest tighten.

✧・゚: *✧・゚:* Rabbitstar *:・゚✧*:・゚✧ Despite himself, his eyes narrowed slightly with the manifestation of a grin across his muzzle as Turtlefang's suggestion rang clearly in his ears. His speculation made sense - proximity would put SunClan at a deeper threat - but where that led Turtlefang was what brought about some pleasure for Rabbitstar. Their desire to venture out of any Clan's borders had been present for moons before they were deputy, had only been grazed back then, but now, as leader... Well, the validation of a cat whose strategic mind they had come to appreciate and potentially even rely on took out some of the sting that plagued their soul these days. “I agree,” they answered calmly. The gravity quickly brought down the brief elation, their expression returning once more to something more solemn. “I've long wanted to venture out and see just what it is the world beyond our borders has to offer, but now more than ever, it seems like a necessary measure. We'll need brave, strong, and clever warriors to investigate. For the sake of all of our Clanmates.”“It isn't your burden to bear, Turtlefang, but if you'd like to volunteer or suggest cats you think would be able to handle that sort of mission... well, I always appreciate hearing your opinion,” he added. “... in the meantime, be careful. You're a valuable cat to our Clan, and it seems that our unseen enemies have a knack for finding cats of that sort.” He/They + Single + Bi + Leader + App: Harepaw

While he wasn't the most attentive to Rabbitstar's moods- he hardly had to be- Turtlefang didn't miss the shift of their expression as he'd mentioned the outlands. And why is that? Unlike Beestar, the point had hardly proven to be a very aggressive leader, satiated enough on the territory Sunclan already had and not probing much at provoking Moonclan. It was more than their enemy deserved, honestly, but wise in uncertain times. For all intents and purposes, the loner grounds were entirely unimportant, if not dangerous for a cat without a proper understanding of the land. It'd take too many patrols to make it a regular facet of Sunclan's territory, it'd have no way to reinforce dominance outside of the scent lines, so on and so forth. It was precisely why they'd gone untouched.
And yet, Rabbitstar stood poised before him with that little hint of pleasure at the mention of going beyond the border. If you weren't my leader, Turtlefang considered, with a slow, neutral brush of his tail against the den floor, I'd be suspicious of those wandering paws. Yet, he showed no such distaste on his expression, maintaining composed neutrality as he tilted his head, lending his ear with greater interest to the mention of the mission itself. "Hmm.. you needn't worry about me." The words felt fake on his tongue, wrong in a way similar to fumbling a phrase somehow. It put the twitch of a smile on his face. A natural defense. "No matter who we assess, I wouldn't mind staying home to make room for other travellers. There's nowhere safer, with the new numbers rule on outings.. Am I to assume you'd be leading this mission, then? I'll take that much into account, if so. Synergies, and all that."

✧・゚: *✧・゚:* Rabbitstar *:・゚✧*:・゚✧ Though he looked at Turtlefang, Rabbitstar's vision remained somewhat distant, trained on the beyond that had held his curiosity ever since he was a kit. So much unknown... A craving stronger than when one had their mind set on a certain type of prey, more abstract than the desire to burn off all the excess energy they'd had their whole life, that desire to know the beyond was what Rabbitstar credited for his previous suffix. Previous was imperative there. “... No,” they answered slowly. “As much as I would gladly oversee it all personally, I'd be of more use to the Clan here. What with these uncertain times, we never know when something will need immediate action or my supervision. Perhaps, back when I was deputy... I would have been the first to volunteer.” It brought about a new level of frustration. The feeling that, if he couldn't risk his own life on it, then they shouldn't risk any at all - but he couldn't risk forcing Swanmask into his paws. He couldn't risk the Clan being attacked without a leader. Couldn't bear the guilt of coming home to a destroyed camp all because he had wandering paws. That was the give and take of the world. The slow drawl of Rabbitstar's answer might have raised Turtlefang's whiskers, if not for his commitment to neutrality. Whether or not his leader indulged their particular temptations was of no interest to him. Instead, with a lax whisk of his tail once more, he merely nodded along. Although, he couldn't help but think, in a distant corner of his mind, I wonder just how many warriors would abide by that supervision. It was no secret that however cohesive the two clan authority's plans had been, there had been plenty of cats running amuck doing Starclan knows what. He'd witnessed enough himself. Honeyflare's strange, stiff movements in those supposedly nonchalant outings to the territory. Whatever Tinyleaf had been doing sneaking around by moonlight- So much for a model warrior. Coyotespring's constant discontent with seemingly everything. Not to mention the frowns that seemed to spread like greencough with every accumulative clan meeting. Things weren't much easier at home than they were out in the loner lands, for better or worse. But leadership left you responsible for particular appearances. Perhaps that was the explanation owed to the point's restless gaze, that distant tone which spoke of days long past. You're leader now, though. A position Turtlefang would have never envied. Shackled to the clan. Shackled to the code. And shackled to example. How boring! Not for the first time, the warrior found himself pleased to have found his own balancing act of striding the line between second advisor to Swanmask without sacrificing his own independence as a lower laborer. Responsibility, as he'd learned in his time as a makeshift guardian for the little family he'd had left, bred nothing but stifling stagnation. Not for the first time, he wondered how Rabbitstar might feel about that sort of thing, if the echo of yearning in his voice left anything to the imagination. But for the millionth time, he didn't ask. "I suppose it'd be unwise to leave anyone else in control during these circumstances. You're sensible, as always." Even since that warm day, when they laid side by side as regular clanmates, Rabbitblaze had never been anything but committed to playing wise. Even when it didn't suit them. "It may be best to keep Swanmask here as backup, then. Perhaps we can exercise a few of the more stir-crazy warriors by lending their energy to the task. New experiences promote perspective and maturation. Some of our younger ranks could use the opportunity." A warning was laced into the words, silent so as not to offend. A few days out of camp could quell the growing dissatisfaction, at least for a little bit. Give a sense of purpose to cats who had yet to settle down, had yet to work out where their greater loyalties lied. As cynical as Turtlefang was towards the smaller tom, he wasn't so unkind as to wish internal conflict upon him at a time when outsiders tore the clan at the seams.
It was just self preservation.

✧・゚: *✧・゚:* Rabbitstar *:・゚✧*:・゚✧ Rabbitstar offered a contemplative angling of his ears, reflecting on Turtlefang's words. “That's a practical idea,” they commented, the thought still turning itself over in his mind. Younger ranks immediately brought about the imagery of Beestar's kits, though Rabbitstar silently shut down their own thought. The most restless among them was Honeyflare, and hadn't his own emotions about his mother led him blindly into those injuries? With the other two having had a better relationship, they supposed either of them would be all the riskier to send out and about like that. Well, there were other young cats. “Well, the energetic among them will need a level headed cat to keep them in line. I'll be sure to keep that in mind,” he finally elaborated. With another small pause, he tilted his head. “... I suppose your brother, Tinyleaf, will be wanting to volunteer. He's always been eager. Young and energetic, he'd make a good fit. Though... if you think there's any reason to not let him go, I'll gladly lend an ear.” He didn't bring up the bright little tom with any malice, but because, he realized, it made him worry for Turtlefang. With only two brothers to his family tree remaining, he didn't imagine it would be easy to allow one of them off on such a journey. Not that Rabbitstar expected Turtlefang would tell them plainly as such. More than anything, they hoped to offer a more discreet way for the brooding heart before them to keep his family together. Perhaps it was a bit of a disclaimer. A reminder that while Turtlefang at this time had nothing to lose in agreeing to the concept, that might not be the case once the Clan at large caught wind of it. Tinyleaf.
It was an obvious suggestion. His brother would never miss out on an opportunity like the one Rabbitstar was proposing. He knew as much, and yet, it didn't stop Turtlefang's tail from stiffening in place of his carefully stilled hackles. Knowing his littermate's... tendencies... wasn't the same as having reality sink in before his very eyes and ears. If the leader were already mentioning the other tom by name, his inclusion would be an inevitability. It wasn't the same as Fawnheart, who Turtlefang could trust to act with caution. Young and energetic were apt words, for sure, but there were plenty more he could spit out, if not for the problems he'd cause for himself doing so.
Making something up on the fly would be simple. Everything could be shut down here and now. But then Tinyleaf would surely find out about it, and they'd surely have another argument, and Fawnheart would definitely involve themselves, because they could mind their own business about anything but Turtlefang's business-
There's still time. There was no need to get his fur in a bunch right now, fussing over something that wasn't finalized. Let Rabbitstar keep their ideas and let Tinyleaf keep his image. The tortie would find another way to handle this.
Sunclan's honor was all they had, these days. But he, as an individual, only had his brothers left. Smaller than Honeyflare, who came back shredded to no-stars and back. Imagining those wounds on apricot fur, too eager paws lain loose and limp on the muddied ground was.
"You have sound judgement, as always." His mew was awfully even, for a cat whose heart had leapt to their throat. Only the displacement of his eyes, aimed just a bit higher than they'd been before so that he no longer faced the point head on, gave away the dissatisfaction brewing under the skull within. "I wouldn't stand in any warrior's way. Now more than ever, loyalty is everything. Any cat willing to volunteer has already gained my personal approval. Although, as always, the final say is only between you and Starclan." But if he were going to get to work on controlling the situation- "How soon are you thinking of launching this?"
