RABBITSTAR The stench of death was ever familiar, ever unwelcome. When it first hit his senses, Rabbitstar thought he might be imagining it. It seemed that any time cats left the camp these days, he could only smell blood and death. The sight of Beestar's body, of Fallenpetal and Honeyflare's bleeding forms, of all the possible future horrors flickered before his eyes with every passing blink. He tried to ignore it, but the gasps from outside the camp - the incoming pair of bodies, of his friend and mentor- the time between those moments seemed to disappear.
Not too much later, he was up above the Clan for a meeting he wasn't sure if he called. Between then he imagined he was given all the information that was relevant, if only because it danced through his brain now, waiting for its release on his tongue.
“Capable cats of SunClan,” he addressed stiffly, eyes narrow and body rigid. “In addition to their transgressions in attacking two of our warriors, of alleging having murdered Beestar - MoonClan has opted to become all the bolder. They have- they have mangled our very own warriors, Darkcinder and Shadepool, on the very territory in which we live our lives. That is an act of war. This was not a skirmish of any sort, this was a crime of blatant hatred and malice.”
Rabbitstar paused. As if taking a break from the impassioned words, trying not to let emotion conquer his tone too much, to not let there be a crack in the walls he maintained. He inhaled deeply. “The Gathering is soon. We will confront MoonClan there. We are still honorable warriors, and I expect none of you will violate the conditions of the Gathering, unless MoonClan proves to lack even that much respect. In the mean time! No cats are to leave camp on their own. If you are to stray more than three fox-lengths from camp, I insist you travel in groups of at least three, for your own safety. While we are strong, we can not afford to keep losing cats to injuries or death. Are there any questions?”

"I have one."From the edge of the crowd, nearer to the meeting point than he'd ever sat at any discussions prior, a voice rang out, curiously unstrained amidst the bloodshed and unshed tears of warriors on the brink of collapsing with yet another irreplaceable loss to their community. Turtlefang's cool stare met Rabbitstar's impassively, the teal color unclouded like the undisturbed waters of the Moonpond, and although probably only half as detached as the ancestors who couldn't seem to be bothered to hear their cries. Although his tone wasn't confrontational, necessarily, there was no mistaking the unhindered criticality in his lofted ears, trained upwards in the unpleasant boldness of a cat who was about to say what nobody else really wanted to humor, not when they were caught in the throes of grief. Everyone but him, tail coiling in measured musing as he considered how to play the part of the leader's loyal companion while openly broaching contradiction.
He settled for keeping his paws tucked, poised obedient and picture-perfect into the shape of a willing warrior while he glossed back over Rabbitstar's orders, back to the origin of rationale. "How do we make this out to be an organized attack?" At a very slight angle, so slight as not to directly peer upon the fallen forms littering the back of the campgrounds, Turtlefang continued, "It certainly would have taken at least two warriors to fall even with two of our own, if not more. But how do we rule out an independent attack? This might not represent the will of Moonclan as a whole." Then, tilting his muzzle back, he finished up with hint of waver to his gaze, no longer placed so readily on his leader's. "..It could be dangerous to assume a declaration of war. Approaching without definitive proof of Pansystar's orders could spur its own conflict." It was harder to say as much, for some reason, with the glimpse of Shadepool's blue pelt haunting the edge of his corneas like a wafting, waiting mist. As if, just for a moment, he had the same impulse as Rabbitstar- to latch onto a point of blame and shake it until it stopped breathing.
But.
It didn't make sense. If this was what Moonclan had wanted to convey all along, wouldn't they have sealed the deal early with Honeyflare and Fallenpetal? What was the point of letting off the others with a warning, only to strike like this in the present? Another pair of cats, yes, but the method of attack was different. The scene of the crime was more tumultuous, so they'd said, thick with scent and chaos where the original attack had been a clean hit and run. Once more, the timing felt off. Once again, there was inconsistency to explore. As if charmed by a puzzle, the allure of putting the pieces into place baited Turtlefang away from the sway of his heart, ever unreliable, and towards a place of comfort. Of untangling the tangled, of making absolute sense and certainty out of the shadows that blurred the bigger picture.
It was easier to paw around at the questions instead of jump to the answers, where he'd be forced to reckon with his feelings, just as unresponsive as they'd been since he was a trainee.
Shadepool always liked it when he played smart in their sessions.

| Sunclan Warrior - 56 - he/him talks like "this" - attacks like this
|
"With all due respect, Rabbitstar," Iceleap piped up, quickly cut off by a snort and a shake of his head, a motion that could be viewed as disrespectful if not for his condition, "you are being paranoid." The statement was bold, sure, but it was honest. Honesty was what was needed right now.
Part of this was his being anti-social, sure, he loathed the idea of having to spend his much-needed alone time around warriors that would stare and judge his every move, treat him like some green apprentice that needed assistance with even the most basic motions of hunting prey, just because he had a few twitches that could mess things up sometimes.
"Anyone could imitate a MoonClan cat's scent, given that they could get close enough to a spot with enough activity. Who's to say this isn't a third party?" He huffed out, "while I don't like this either, I'd like to assume MoonClan warriors are honorable at the very least. Th-" he quieted the next few words out of his mouth before speaking up again, "a body does not become that mangled unless at least some of the injuries were inflicted after death. Pray tell, why would a MoonClanner do such a thing?"
"I know they harbor hate for us, but if I may ask so boldly, Rabbitstar, would you continue to tear up a warriors body after death in your current state? Do you know any clan cat who would do such a thing?"

✧・゚: *✧・゚:* Rabbitstar *:・゚✧*:・゚✧ He was surprised, but curious, upon hearing Turtlefang speak up. It wasn't very typical for him to chime in in... most conversations, really, least of all a Clan meeting. The question, followed by those points... they made sense. Rabbitstar reflected on them thoughtfully until Iceleap's statement brought about a flick of his curled ear. Not that Rabbitstar was opposed to hear that another cat had similar thoughts to Turtlefang, he had intentionally asked for his Clanmates to speak up - but the precursor to being called paranoid didn't make it feel any gentler. Made his fur ruffle slightly before he forced it to lie flat once more. “Why would any cat bother to do something like this, indeed,” he finally answered, eyes drifting beyond the camp's walls before returning to the cats in front of him. “Whatever the true nature of these attacks are, we should remain cautious. We will, of course, discuss this at the Gathering, but this all returns to none of us knowing just what's happened. The only connections we've got to work on is MoonClan scent, unprovoked attacks, with claims and implications that three of these attacks of ended in death. Beestar, Darkcinder, and Shadepool - three cats with mysterious deaths. We only know that the cat who attacked Fallenpetal and Honeyflare smelled of MoonClan and implied to have been Beestar's murderer.”He paused, thinking. Surely, if he wanted to hunt MoonClan cats, he wouldn't just send the same warrior each time? It seemed irrationally risky. Then again, it would certainly make it seem like a rogue attack, and independent or third party as Turtlefang and Iceleap had suggested... “I concede that there's a lot left unknown, but this is exactly why I think we need to be cautious when leaving camp. I'll still take questions, comments, suggestions, concerns, and such while we're gathered here right now, but should anything else come up or should a cat simply not wish to speak in front of the Clan at large, feel free to visit me in my den to discuss these matters. The Clan's safety may depend on it.” He/She + Single + Gay + Leader

Iceleap's reply, so detached from Turtlefang's own meager attempt at respectability, garnered a sideglance from the tom, eyes narrowing slightly with the enthusiasm with which the other warrior rushed to defend Moonclan's honor. As if any of us can assume the values of a Moonclan warrior. While it did serve to reinforce his own narrative, the doubling down on insisting innocence is what pushed the tortie a little too far. It was one thing to suggest an alternate line of reasoning, but another to try and completely absolve their enemies through dreamy ideas of a warrior's universal virtue. Trusting that kind of fantasy only took you so far even among your own clanmates. Extending that trust across the border entirely, when no Sunclan cat had even the slightest perspective on how Moonclan raised its members... was ridiculous. It was unbelievably juvenile. How swiftly we forget past brutalities.
He didn't speak any further with Rabbitstar's address. Instead, he turned his gaze elsewhere, no longer focusing on any one cat and instead searching off somewhere to the sidelines. While he shared Iceleap's suspicion towards the circumstances and prayed for a threat that'd be easier to maul than an entire clan, he wouldn't be so soft on the case as to relinquish even a cat bound by the code from his wariness. If Moonclan did have a paw in things, he for one wouldn't falter in delivering sweet revenge.
But in the meantime, it'd be nice to be sure. War didn't sound easy on his sunbathing schedule, even if it offered a fun distraction from the burials they'd be hosting today.
