mentions: Crowflame, Wildspring, Iceglow, Sloepaw, & TortoisepawFor reasons that everyone knew and no one wanted to discuss, Rabbitstar had been in a real rush to push out the night patrol without so much as the trial run he'd promised Turtlefang all that time ago. If Turtlefang was the same cat he was in the past, he would have been quick to mention how haphazard it was, especially so soon after the deaths loss of two clanmates. While it made surface level sense to start this off as soon as possible to reinforce the territory, no preparation for the bulk of the team meant that it would be a chaotic pursuit, especially with the personalities on some of the five that were joining him tonight. It was too fast. It was reckless. It was brazenly un-Rabbitstar, without all the tedious steps and meticulous planning until everything lined up just right.
But for the cat Turtlefang was right now, it was at least something to put his mind to. It was an escape from the way everyone looked around at each other so miserably, at the way his brothers stared at him like he'd break at any given moment.
So here he was, standing before an array of cats larger than he'd been anticipating. Apparently some members of the clan came with hooks, and he very pointedly did nothing to address the excess invitees as he focused his attention first and foremost on the milky glint of the moon, slivered like a cat's eye as it peered down on them distantly. Maybe, after all that had been said and done at the last Gathering, that's exactly what it was. Too quickly, he turned back to his clanmates, teal eyes aglow with a silent authority as he perused their pelts beneath the hulking shadow of the mountains which framed their home. Some gold, some white, some mottled, some dark. A little bit of everything. He hoped, for all the spill-over that'd occurred with certain cats wriggling their way beneath his claws, that the diversity of warriors and dynamics would make for a successful night. Maybe giving Rabbitstar some good news would take that wild, strung tension out of his already slight frame as they milled about camp looking like a raincloud had dumped the sky out onto their shoulders. "Welcome to our first night patrol. As you're all aware, we'll be focusing primarily on familiarization with the land and its nightly occurrences for this first perusal so that we might be better prepared for spotting peculiarities around the territory as they crop up." Carrying an air of gravitas, Turtlefang's body curved into a quarter turn to pace the length of the clustered warriors, tortoiseshell pelt fading in and out of view as his hairs caught and released moonlight through the striping of branches above. "Procedure tonight won't be considerably different from any other border patrol, but as might be obvious to you all, we'll be handling reduced visibility especially in our forested routes. With that in mind, I ask that everyone proceed with caution first and foremost. However well you believe you know where your paws may carry you, I promise, they won't spot a stray rock or arched root until you've already tripped and fallen. We're lucky to have Sloepaw with us should any of you take any unfortunate tumbles, but I'd prefer we don't overwork an already solo medic on our mutual first outing as a team." Having paused at one end of the group, the warrior turned once more to pace back to his original position before delivering his next words. "There are six of us. A regular patrol generally won't consist of more than three cats at a time. For this reason, I've devised a split in our group once we've reached Sunchaser's Meadow to help us cover the most ground and generally keep things run tighter as we go about our business." With a wave of his tail for emphasis, as if parting the group with a division of the air itself, he recited, "Crowflame, Iceglow, and Tortoisepaw will compose one team. Wildspring and Sloepaw, with me. We'll spend half of the night in our primary group, and we'll split into our secondaries at the passing edge of moonhigh. Are there any questions or concerns before I continue?" It was a brainless decision, what with the way the former set of warriors was so clingy to one another that any attempt to push them apart would surely result in a headache. It was an inconvenience for flexibility, but Rabbitstar had caved, and Turtlefang would have to live with his leader's weakness for the time being. He only hoped, as he barely let his gaze shift that little fraction closer to the edge of Iceglow's orange ear and no further, that it would be an acceptable enough compromise to keep the river running smooth between everyone.
Any friction, now more than ever, would be gouged out before it became a fracture. The last thing Sunclan needed was another conflict in the middle of their lowest point. Ideally, the others would see the same. Cooperation shouldn't be a concern with the cats that'd been intentionally recruited for the job, but it was also necessary to keep one's exclusivity. Playing nice would keep you on board. After all, if there was any trouble, it'd be an easy kick from the next run. In the worst case scenario, a few whispers to Rabbitstar could go a long way, with the state border security was in.
From the teetering disconnect between his mind and his heart, where his consciousness stumbled along like a game of balance, Turtlefang thought to himself that he'd really like to avoid using that privilege, if given the chance. If he could just have a quiet night in the woods and go pass out afterwards without anyone saying more than to recount a few basic reports to him, he'd consider that a win. Who knows? A soft voice murmured from within. Maybe you'll get killed out there next and never have to trouble yourself again.
It was going to be a long night.

Wildspring tried to shake the eeriness of his brother's expression when he and Iceglow brought back Darkcinder and Shadepool, the lost shine he tried to hide in order to stay strong in front of everyone. It was times like this when Wildspring wished he could stay here and spend time with his brother allowed him to let go with someone he could lean on but he wasn't able to do it his brother had asked him to join the night patrol before everything had happened but he was not about to let Rabbitstar down just because his heart was telling him it mattered more than the safety of the others. Of course he knew that it was not true, his feelings were trying to dictate how he should do things but like his brother he wasn't one to outwardly show them. His violet coloured eyes met the teal ones of Turtlefang as he spoke, uncertain as to when he was placed in charge of them all but had no need to question it maybe it was something he missed when he spoke with his brother. As the other tom explained what they would be doing and who they would be with Wildspring looked up between the branches to the sky above spotting the moon and what few stars shone that night.
When he heard that he would be with Sloepaw and Turtlefang his ear twitched though he had no complaints as so he remained silent just dipping his head slightly in the end to show he had heard everything.

βΌβ³βΌ Iceglow βΌβ³βΌ Turtlefangβs pretentious words made Iceglowβs shredded ear twitch with idle irritation, tail swaying slowly to distract his mind just enough to absorb them all the same. He, Tortoisepaw, and Crowflame in their own team? For reasons they couldnβt quite place, they werenβt a fan. Hm. βTrying to get rid of me already?,β he teased, grinning out the uncomfortable prickle in his pelt. Dropping the grin and narrowing his eyes, he continued more seriously. βIs Rabbitstar going to want us to split up when heβs already anxious enough to send out the group at large? Iβm not gonna fight you, youβre leading the mission, but I thought his concern was a strength in numbers or something.βFor now, heβd bite back any other questions about whether one group would be hunting, the different routes, etc. - Iceglow was going to give Turtlefang some time to elaborate. He had said the questions and concerns were for before he continued, after all, and while he enjoyed to be a bother he wasnβt going to steal whatever speech the tortie had from him. No, this time heβd let him carry on. After all, most other days heβd gladly argue with whoever was leading the mission if he thought it better suited said mission. Not like he expected Turtlefang would notice. It made for a good lull before Iceglow found something to try to entertain his sister and apprentice, though. Crowflame stood stock-still, back straightened, as if moving even a mere inch would cause her to miraculously stop hearing everything Turtlefang was saying. At random intervals they would give a slight nod. A regular patrol, just dark? Yes, that made sense. Careful, yes, xe would be the Most careful. Splitting up? Sounds reasonable. A team of herself, her brother, and her his apprentice? Of course, genius, Crowflame always felt she worked best with her twin, and she would always relish the opportunity to show the little apprentice the cooler side of things. Of course, xeir demeanor shifted the second Iceglow opened his mouth. They stifled a snort, visibly straining to maintain their posture.

TORTOISEPAW SunClan Apprentice + They/Them + 6 moons "SPEECH" VIOLENCE
The little apprentice avoided as much eye contact with Turtlefang as they could. The commanding and chilly nature of the cat offset them, as they were used to the joking and sunny personality of Iceglow. Looking up only once, they nodded in response to what the leading tom instructed them to do. I've never been out of the clans this late... I hope everything will go alright. A much happier thought soon followed. Man, the other apprentices are gonna be so jealous of me and Sloepaw. We get to stay up late with the warriors! A uncontrollably excited grin broke out on their face as they struggled to sit still.
Finally getting to meet Iceglow's sibling, Crowflame, personally was exciting to Tortoisepaw as well. While Iceglow hadn't talked much about them in passing with Tortoisepaw, they felt as though they would be seeing a lot more of them in the future. The looked up at the ginormous cat, feeling intimidated before looking back at Iceglow as he started speaking. Feeling the demeanor of the group shift into a slightly more... not aggressive, but argumentative? The apprentice thought to themself, they folded their ears smaller and scooted closer to Iceglow, disliking the fact there was conflict. We're in the same clan, for StarClan's sake. Can't we all just get along?

The teasing went unhumored, Turtlefang not even deigning to look in the direction of the voice until it had shifted to a legitimate line of thought. When the actual question came to fruition, blue locked with violet in silent consideration, but not deterred from immediate response. When it came to leadership, after all, confidence was key, even if only leading a patrol. "Rabbitstar enstated a clear parameter of three warriors at minimum. As of right now, the attacks have only been launched on isolated pairs. I assure you, it will be enough. If we move in such a large group at all times, I would consider it more of a hindrance to progress." Gaze sliding off the warrior, he shifted to address the group in its entirety, now. "I'm sure we all have concerns about the dangers at our borders recently. But we cannot allow ourselves to cower in herds just to scare off an enemy who can't even show its face to our clan at large. Our territory is large enough as is, and it won't be possible to cover the landscape without dividing up the labor. It wouldn't be fair of me to ask you all to walk every step of the environment as an alternative, either, when we're adjusted to taking specific regions on our patrols and no further."
It wasn't as if he was stupid. He knew that breaking up the group built in more vulnerability, but the clans didn't build bulk patrols for a reason. It made travelling noisier, it was harder to keep every cat together, it extended their points of weakness across a broader span unless they clustered into an awkward bundle. Moreover, it just wasn't needed. They were trained warriors, the most of them, and in spite of what had been happening, the deaths were still freak occurrences. There was no need to change everything up even more drastically than they had by organizing a night patrol in the first place. Kitten steps were needed. Tail flicking strategically, he added, "We will only be dividing up at a specific checkpoint, and will be reuniting before moving forward. Consider it a fusion of tactics- that way, even in the time we're apart, our patrols will be within range of each other should we need to reach the other for any reason. We won't be on opposite sides of the territory by any means, and we will only be separated for a limited window of time. I can explain this more in detail in a moment, unless anyone has any further questions."

Wildspring had been fine with everything though he made no complaints when Iceglow questioned things, and Turtlefang's explanation to said questioning complaints. Wildspring felt the tension that built in the air, it began to set his fur on end making his teeth snap together with an audible click. One thing he did not like was being delayed and so he hoped that none of the others had questions if it was already going to be explained further. If they just let Turtlefang talk then any questions not answered with all the information given could come afterwards before they set out not having to stop to answer every sudden question that came to mind.

βΌβ³βΌ Iceglow βΌβ³βΌ Nonchalantly, Iceglow gestured with a flick of his tail for Turtlefang to carry on. His concerns had been addressed, there was nothing more for him to say on the matter. If they were getting answers soon, heβd rather not impede that process. Itβd get boring to just stand here all night heckling Turtlefang, as funny as it would be in another situation. Still, he stole a glance at Crowflame. They gave xir a ghost of a smile, accompanied by a playful eye roll. Cβmon Fades, get it together! The turtle man is gonna kick you out of the club, he teased internally. Oh yeah, as soon as they split up he was going to make it his mission to make sure Crowflame couldnβt maintain a straight face for long. Unless, maybe, something important did actually happen. In which case theyβd do all that they could in their power to keep Crowflame and Tortoisepaw safe. Iceglow returned his attention fully onto Turtlefang, expression leaning back into something serious and attentive. The various missions at play were clear in his head, overlapping at some parts but not enough so that anything became blurry. He was ready to hone in on anything. Although Turtlefang's chilly demeanor didn't thaw, the slight tension in his whiskers eased up once the spotlight had passed over him, granting him the freedom to speak his next words without the pressure of targeted scrutiny. At least, not so long as he looked more in Wildspring's direction, who seemed more than eager to accept his word and get going. "Think of this as your first day as a 'paw, back when your priority task was to get familiar with the territory. We'll be relearning the exact same land, but under the cover of night. You'll be surprised what changes once the sun goes down, so be as observant as you would be on a regular border patrol. Get to know the night as you already know the day. That'll be the main objective of this initial excursion. Secondary duties will be assigned once we break apart." Then, in a spur of the moment of inspiration, Turtlefang's head tilted in thought, flashing Iceglow a more considering glance. A rare indulgence, but the tortie wasn't one to let his personal biases interfere with adaptation. Strategy should always be ever-evolving, same as the plants and animals that utilized it. "Actually. I may have come to a new conclusion regarding our planned route. But I'll explain it as we go."
With a flick of his tail, beckoning the warriors beyond the immediate defenses of the camp nearby, he turned halfway to take a step outwards- the first step on their mission. "Come. There's no use wasting moonlight when I can talk as I walk. Proceed in any order you please, so long as you're within earshot." Without much consideration for readying up any further, Turtlefang began striding westward, sparing a final glance over the shoulder towards his group before letting his attention fall to the front. Tortoisepaw would be safe glued to Iceglow's side, so there was nothing else to worry about. The rest had proven more than capable of keeping up independently as warriors and medicine cats alike, and he trusted them to do as much now as the patrol officially began.

βΌβ³βΌ Iceglow βΌβ³βΌ With a wary gaze, Iceglow followed diligently after Turtlefang, guiding Tortoisepaw along with his tail. He considered Tortoisepaw the skittish sort. He made a mental note (again) to keep an eye on them, and to take care to not have them be frightened by the forest after dark. While even Iceglow would concede that Turtlefang was right to have them get familiar with the territory at night, in his experience it wasnβt much more dangerous than the day. Then again, he wasnβt sized for fox food. Or owl food, or- Okay so maybe the night could be dangerous. In either case, he waited attentively for Turtlefangβs continued explanation as he followed. He just hoped he wasnβt going to regret speaking up earlier. He/They + Single + Gay + Apprentice: Tortoisepaw

Crowflame stood and followed with a flick of her tail. "Yes, sir." Xe said seriously as xe turned to follow the rest of the patrol. They were being entirely serious, determined to keep their professional and serious demeanor throughout the patrol. ...Or at least until the groups had separated.

Crowflame's strange formality earned xem a confused angle from the leader's ears, otherwise forward facing in their orientation to capture the sounds of the sparse woodland as they passed among the brush Sir? That had to be a first. Turtlefang resigned himself to saying nothing, knowing that humoring even the most well intentioned phrasing could garner him a disdainful snort or two from certain outspoken flame points. Instead, he observed the swaying of the field grasses waiting ahead of them, seemingly drained of color in the pale illumination of the nighttime. Cast in whites and pale greys, cut deeply with the striping of pitch black shadows between every accentuated blade, the flow of the meadow in the slight breeze could start to make you dizzy. As they approached open field, he picked back up on his discussion, although his tone grew more hushed in the stillness of the dark, as if joining the atmosphere in its anticipation.
"I've made several key revisions to the initial plan. I believe they'll suit our group in our inexperience, for the time being, especially since we have apprentices with us today. Caution is beneficial." Turtlefang hopped over a fallen log, already half eaten away by fungi into jagged, uneven splinters. The jump was a little higher, more cartoonishly emphasized, than needed- It served as a visual warning to the cats behind him, a silent indicator of the obstacle ahead. "Rather than separating once to fan out across territory sectors, we'll peruse the whole landscape after all. But I still intend to save your paws the work; We'll be using interlocking paths at key intervals." To emphasize the point, the tip of his tail twirled in a small circle, tracing an invisible route. "Every checkpoint on our patrol across the land, we'll divide up for a short period of time and take opposite directions to cover each half of a given area. We'll meet up immediately after breaching the edge of the given location, and proceed as a team until the next split. That way, we'll minimize our time spent apart but still avoid having us all cover the entire territory. Each team will be walking half the territory instead of the full thing, and our close proximity will mean it'll be easy to reconnect if anything goes wrong. I took the courtesy of mapping out some critical spots ahead of time, albeit not for this particular purpose... But using that knowledge, I'll direct you on when and where we will be together or separated. Does that make sense?"

Looking back slightly for the others to make sure they got over safely and Sloepaw did not have a job to do so soon into the night patrol if anything he hoped they would not need her knowledge of herbs to help anyone tonight. Though anything could happen Wildspring was hopeful.

βΌβ³βΌ Iceglow βΌβ³βΌ βMakes sense to me,β Iceglow shrugged casually. He bit back the urge to copy Crowflame's sir, deciding he'd probably gotten under Turtlefang's coat enough for this segment of the patrol. There would be other opportunities. In any case, he had to hang back. They weren't really sure what Sloeflame's jumping capabilities were like, if she needed help he'd be right behind her to get her over the log properly. More than that, he had Tortoisepaw to worry about. It might be reassuring for them to have Iceglow behind them to help them over the log if they needed it, or to praise them on the good jump. Either or. ... well. The concern for the younger cats, yes, but Iceglow wouldn't pretend he was some sort of pure soul - he also had to hang back in case Crowflame somehow flunked the jump. She was probably the tallest among them, if she messed up, it'd be pretty funny. Hilarious even. A mental image to savor. Pretending to not be hoping for his sister's downfall, they turned their gaze to Tortoisepaw to see how they would fare. He/They + Single + Gay + Apprentice: Tortoisepaw

TORTOISEPAW SunClan Apprentice + They/Them + 6 moons "SPEECH" VIOLENCE
The apprentice was glad Iceglow was there to help guide them with his tail. The forest seemed a lot bigger and more threatening at night when you couldn't see what was hiding in the shallow divots between trees or hear animals moving when you didn't know where they were. Suffice to say, Tortoisepaw was freaking out a little bit. The grim setting on top of the already scary premise of patrolling when bodies had been found so recently was nerve-wracking. They swished their tail from left to right once, moving forward along with the group even if it took a little bit of speed on their part to keep up.
When the cat was confronted with the huge log, er, well at least quite huge to them, they noticed that Iceglow stuck back with them instead of clearing the log as well. A happy buzz filled their chest, though with the tense atmosphere, they didn't let the rumbling purr out, instead opting to prove how greatful they were by jumping over the fallen tree with quite a leap. Getting low down on the ground into a jumping position, they wriggled back and forth, trying to steady their legs enough to make the jump. After half a second more, they hopped into the air, landing solidly on the wooden pillar, if with a bit of scrabbling up the edge. Proud of themself, they let out a confident "HAH!" before jumping back down with the former half of the party.
