Mosstumble was asleep in their den, but nothing about it was a restful sleep. Their white paws twitched as if they were running, and they could be heard mumbling something unintelligible.
-
They didn't know where they were, but three clear faces stood before them. Rosebloom, Webpaw, and Foamfur. There were others there, too, but their faces were blurred. The grey and white feline cowered before them as they fell under three judgemental gazes.
"I'm sorry!" they pleaded, green eyes wide. "I've been trying to be better, I promise!"
But they didn't waver. Mosstumble could feel their own anxiety mounting within them. Desperately, they turned to Webpaw, hoping to make an appeal to the dark-furred molly. "What's going on? I thought we'd made up!" But, like the others, she didn't move.
Mosstumble felt their legs shaking as they melted to the ground. The small feline curled into a ball with their paws shielding their head. Claws unsheathed dug into their own fur. In their pathetic state, they cowered and whimpered to themself, squeezing green eyes shut, hoping to wake up in their nest again. StarClan, make it stop! Please make them go away!
"When I you get so mean, Mossball?"
Mosstumble froze, and a silence fell over the area. Their head shot up. "No," they whispered.
They whipped around. Rosebloom, Webpaw, and Foamfur were gone, but a new figure had taken their place.
"Mom..."
"Don't act to happy to see me, Mossball."
"Don't call me that."
The two looked at each other for a moment, Mosstumble in complete disbelief.
"Where have you been?"
She remained silent. Heather eyes bored into their soul.
"Answer me!"
The only hesitation was in her words. Nothing in her face or in her body language revealed she was holding anything back. "People don't leave you, mossy. You push them away."
Mosstumble felt both their face and their stomach drop at her words. "No... no, no, no, no. I tried! I've been trying so hard! I know I can be a jerk, but I'm trying to change! I want to change so bad!"
Again, she silently stared at her kit.
"No, no. Don't do this to me. Don't." Their voice grew more desperate as they spoke. "I was so young when you left... What could I have done to push you away?"
Mosstumble looked up, and saw her beginning to fade away. "No!" they cried, "come back! Please! What am I doing wrong? Why can't you stay? I don't understand!" But it was to no avail. She was gone, and Mosstumble let out a sorrowful wail as they sunk to the ground once more.
-
Panting, the grey and white warrior shot up in their nest. Their Clanmates were sleeping beside them, and crickets could be heard chipping from outside the den. They let themself flop back down into their nest, staring at the den ceiling. I'm trying so hard. It has to be enough...I can't do this much longer.
