In silent agreement with Rookbriar's assessment, they placed their broad twig aside, blinking down at it in thoughtful consideration before moving on to the next of the collection. Slowly, as the pair began to work their way through the pile, and the stripes began to transform the rocks into grey forests of muddy tree trunks breaking its surface, Fawnheart amassed a few they liked- The big stripe stick, the thin stripe stick, and the wiggly stripe stick, named as such for its warped, swirled base that made a wavering, fuzzy stroke in place of the others' straight ones. In an effort to test his own restraint, he'd all but removed any tapered twigs, too paranoid at the thought of a sharpness managing to pierce through the soft petals of their test flowers and leaving their bee torn to violent shambles.
With three twigs ensured, and a canvas of stripes to choose from, Fawnheart idly grasped at the broadest once more, flexing his paw firmly yet loosely about the diameter as they searched for the best position; In all their striping, between the tension of his paw and the nerves fraying his precision, even the cleanest marks seemed to have a shaky edge. Maybe kits wouldn't notice, but... While there was no escaping their usual insecurity, they could at least tackle the dilemma of gripping. More than anything else, it was hard to handle a stick in the same way a squirrel might hold something, with a cat's paws generally being used for little more than than travel. The feeling of not only grasping, but moving something around with purpose, was an alien one, completely counterintuitive to their instinctive moveset. Digging miniature trenches into the earth for practice, they worked on adjusting to that sensation- muscle memory, they remembered from a distant training session, was how you learned to make any motion your own, no harder than breathing in the morning air.
Light-pawed. They framed their paw higher against the twig, worked on dabbing it about rather than stabbing or grinding the tip into the ground. Like batting at butterflies...

✧ ♬♩♡ ♪♩ Rookbriar ♩♪ ♡♩♬ ✧ It didn't take very long for her to be completely entranced by the process. A few stripes in, the world had all but vanished to her, making the stripes all the more pronounced to her mismatched eyes. All the differences created by variations in strategy swam through her head, constantly comparing and contrasting, weighing them against each other, trying to decide on something perfect. At some point, she finally noticed Fawnheart's change in action. Rookbriar stopped her own stripe-making to watch with wide-eyed curiosity - and to give her aching paw a break from the building strain she hadn't noticed until that moment. “You're getting pretty good at this,” she commented, looking on in awe. “Practicing on the mud is a good idea. Maybe I'll give it a try, but I think my paw needs some rest first.” She + Single + Lesbian + Warrior

Slow and steady, as if easing out of a dream, the gleam of focus behind Fawnheart's gaze ebbed out, replaced by wide eyed concern for the aforementioned paw. Paying only minimal acknowledgement to Rookbriar's kind words, he gently set the stick down before swinging his lowered muzzle to peek at the other warrior's paws. Muddy as usual, but exclusively in color! Could it be that even with an extra set of toes, even she had trouble adjusting to the scrawling movements? With a worried twitch at his tail base, sending a tiny ripple down the splotches, they shifted their nose back to the stick, poking it lightly in a vague semblance of justice for the two of their struggles wrangling it. Around the nudging of his nose, he spoke up at last, with his mind finally pulled away from the abyssal abstraction of shapes and lines and bringing ideas into reality.
"Is.. there anything I can do? For your paw?" Blinking softly, they already began to look around, as if for a magical herb to appear that would instantaneously restore Rookbriar's limb. Admittedly, even his own paw felt a bit strained from all the precisionwork. Not enough that it was in need of rest, but certainly enough to pause him for the time being. Rookbriar comes first, though.

✧ ♬♩♡ ♪♩ Rookbriar ♩♪ ♡♩♬ ✧ With an appreciative purr, Rookbriar shook her head gently as she flexed the strained paw. “I think it just needs some rest! It's a strange position to keep your paws in for too long - or, at least for me it is! All compact and trying to do fine movements, it eventually just sort of wears a cat out,” she mused, with an additional toe wiggle of reassurance. "When I was an apprentice, I was always trying to make my paws really flexible - I guess I wanted to be impressive or something - and that sort of weird paw movement eventually used to cause a strain like this too."Gesturing playfully at Fawnheart with her other paw, she giggled. “Be sure to give your paw a break now and then, while you're still young!” As if she herself hadn't been so entirely entranced by their experimentation. That made sense.. So they shared the difficulty. Somehow, it was a bit comforting- not that either of them would be pained, but good to know neither was quietly enduring it alone. So.. we're the same. He'd have to be more mindful, in that case.. Fawnheart's eyes caught the wiggle of her paw, a reminder that for all their fussing, she was just fine. With a slow, soothing relief melting down the orange of their back like a warm summer rain, their anxious idling came to a stop. Successfully reassured, he raised his head from where he'd been tormenting the stick to which they owed their delay. Or, um. Not torment. Just poking..
Either way. The warrior let Rookbriar's ease of mind infect his, allowing his attention to change trajectories.. with a slight furrow of his muzzle. Still young? I think.. you're not much older than me. With a tiny fidget of the paws, they let it pass them by. That was probably a joke. Probably. Instead, they followed her example; it was break time for both of them! With a ginger stretch of his forelegs, he dropped into a long sprawl, fur trembling with the splay of his front toes as he worked out the tension that'd been accumulating. It all ended on a good shake of his pelt, like throwing off dewdrops after falling asleep in the meadow the other morning. Er- They should probably make sure that didn't happen again.
