"O-Oh.." Another moment of genuine surprise, but heading back in a kinder direction as Fawnheart tucked their chin down in a flustered motion, absorbing the nudges like they could bump the sad feelings right out. It probably doesn't work that way. But... Once again, it was hard to hold onto that slippery negativity. Not when someone was being so sweet. And.. it's not like they hadn't always secretly wanted a chance to talk with the kits. Not specifically Rookbriar's litter- He could never be so presumptuous- but the abstract idea of the clan's youngest members in general. Someone even he could manage to take care of, who didn't expect him to be the best hunter or fighter, and.
Well. To be offered a chance to meet not just the new kits, but his friend's family, was a momentous one. They kept their gaze lowered, but the brightness radiating from Rookbriar was no less present in the feeling of her exuberance beside them. "That's.. a really big honor. I guess no one's ever wanted that of me before." He stuttered a little after the fact, peeking back up. "Oh- I'm sure other cats might offer, but. You're the first, is all. So.. I hope I can make a good impression on them. And- Well, maybe it won't be so hard to do? With... both of us as a team. I'll feel a bit more confident... But, where should we even start?" That much was an important precedent to set. The way she already talked, they wondered if she hadn't already started a bit of lore about the bees in advance. And if that wasn't the case, then how could they even begin? Had the kittens ever seen a bee before? "I'll try to live up to expectation.. any family of yours already means a lot to me, so." Fawnheart modestly pawed his muzzle at the edge, as if itching. An unusual itch that couldn't be placed. Maybe, somewhere in their heart, the agitation was welling up. "I.. I might feel a little excited, right now."

It was clear he enjoyed kits, his excitement and calling it an honor made it obvious enough, but it made her wonder just what had made Fawnheart think he had some sort of cloud-high expectations placed on their little shoulders. Was their kindness and devotion not already enough? Rookbriar didn't get to ponder it for very long. Where should we even start? The question was as glaringly obvious as the sun beaming down on them, and yet she hadn't even considered it. She laughed with the realization of how far ahead of herself she was. “I'm glad you're excited! Don't worry too much, though, we'll just have to do our best - besides, you've already got a jump start on me! I didn't even consider that we might have to think of something before we actually do it! I'm so thankful for you!” She closed her eyes, wiggling her ears like the antennae of a bee in hopes of understanding something about Swarm life that she hadn't yet considered. “Well, bees don't have to hunt prey, so I guess warriors would just be gathering pollen instead of hunting and making honey. They might still fight, but...” There wasn't much time to worry about the intricate differences between the two types of warriors before something seemingly obvious hit her. “Oh, I have an idea! We can tell a story about the Swam being formed! A leader and a few warriors needing to find their perfect home - why not start at the very beginning, you know?” She + Single + Lesbian + Queen

Fawnheart's ears rose up as they watched the strange wiggling of Rookbriar's, and only perked up even further with her proposition. A dawn of the swarm? He tried to imagine what that might even look like. But then, how were the clans founded, anyway? It reminded him, just a little, of the recent reveal that'd occurred at the Gathering. The unspoken history that neither group had ever known about, restored before their very eyes like a geode that'd finally been cracked. The history that both clans were still busy debating. Should Sunswarm have such a tumultuous beginning?
A nursery tale shouldn't be something so high stakes. Not when reality was already so harsh. Fawnheart considered as much with their next proposal: "Maybe.. the bees wanted to find a safe place where they originally lived in Sunchaser's Meadow. Because... Although there were so many flowers to hunt- Or, um, gather from- there was no safe shelter during the rainy days. And.. bees would get hurt in the raindrops. So they went on a journey into the woods! Or..." They faltered in their premise, realizing that it might make for too short a story if it all took place within Sunclan's territory. But, it'd be hard to describe a location he'd never been before... they weren't very good at visualizing the unknown, not so vividly as to paint a story. "Well. Should we make it larger scale? I thought maybe a journey from the meadow would work because a bee is much smaller than a cat, so it would feel much bigger to them... but I just realized they can fly very fast." Somehow, it didn't seem any better to choose Moonclan territory. Too contradictory. "Um.. This is harder than I thought."

I think the swarm leaving the meadow to look for safety in the perfect tree and figuring out hives is a great idea!” Rookbriar stopped to think about Tinyleaf's last point, smiling almost sheepishly. “Well, and, I don't think the kits would think about how fast bees can fly, anyway. Maybe Leafkit, but they are still kits.”She thought. “Maybe some of the trees they found were too short, too thin, too far from the flowers, too close to some sort of predator... all sorts of little issues until they could find their perfect home, you know? I think that would be a pretty good start for the Swarm!” Hm. The Swarm. SunSwarm? Or...? “Actually, are we still calling it SunSwarm? Leafkit's a smart one, Fawnheart already began internalizing, preparing notes for their big debut as his partner in storytelling raised another very good point. It was good to figure out a starting location and general framework for what would become the settlement of the bees, but the details were important, too. At least the kittens probably wouldn't spare it much thought; that left room for error. With more thought than they'd ever given battle training during apprenticeship, much less strategizing actual tactics for clan life, they puzzled over the next question with a little scrunch of their nose, paws coming tightly together as if to manifest something that could eventually be revealed beneath.
"Ummm..." Slowly, they looked around the meadow, a sunbeam of inspiration alighting in their chest. "Well. We call ourselves Sunclan because of Sunchaser's blessing... but, if we don't want to make it too complicated and give the bees their own beliefs yet, maybe they're just called SunSwarm because... the sun helps grow the flowers. So, it's like... a tribute to their resources." Blinking now at Rookbriar for the stamp of approval (it was a story for her kits after all), they added lightly, "I guess. That could also mean WaterSwarm, but... the water is dangerous for them and the sun isn't. So it's less controversial." Also, they couldn't really think of names outside of the forbidden MoonSwarm. If a rival swarm was necessary, maybe it'd warrant more of a specific type of name, but for now... it seemed like it'd be okay. "If.. things change, the swarm can always rename themselves, maybe. Like name change ceremonies..."

✧ ♬♩♡ ♪♩ Rookbriar ♩♪ ♡♩♬ ✧ “Oh, that’s true!,” she chirped as she nodded enthusiastically. “I like that idea! Alright, so SunSwarm started off hiveless in the meadow, with all the flowers, but the rains threatened to wash all the bees away. So, their leader…. Something. Took them on a journey to the forest to find the perfect tree for them to live in, and they built their own hive for extra protection. That’s a good start for their adventures, I think!” What else did they need? The leader needed a name, and maybe they needed some names of the other bees living in the Swarm… “So I suppose we need names and obstacles.” She scrunched her nose as she thought, tilting her head and keeping her eyes on the nearby flowers as if they might lend some sort of insight. Some clue into what issues the bees would face specifically, what things bees would name themselves, and what else they needed. … stories were hard work. They were lucky that most of their stories were of tales of the past that had already come to pass. Still, it wasn’t like her to let a little bit of hard work deter her. Life would be so very boring if that was the case. Thin trees, young trees, short trees, predators… “Maybe the first nice tree belonged to some sort of bee eating bird,” she suggested, still very lost in her own thoughts. "Oh, wow..." Building an entire world for bees to live in was harder than he'd originally thought. Who would've expected stories would be so complex? Was that what made elders so proficient at them- moons and moons of necessary experience? And here Fawnheart was on moon one, trying to figure out how to craft an epic in one go! Not for the first time, they wished they had some sort of guiding figure who could advise them in the wise ways of big ideas... Although Rookbriar was a fantastic stand-in, she already had enough cats to look after within her own nursery nest! With a bit more determination, they decided to try and meet the big questions head-on! "Well..."... "What kind of birds eat bees?" Their mind had other ideas. The visual left the warrior's whiskers twitching with a ghostly pain, both saddened by the prospect of losing a Sunswarm warrior as well as perturbed at the thought of eating a creature that could sting your mouth... But then, he supposed he didn't know much about the strategies of birds, either. Instead, from their limited perspective as a feline, the only equivalent experience they could consider would be like biting into a porcupine... "It sounds... dangerous! But... birds smaller than us do it, don't they? A robin to us... could be like a fox to a bee. I wonder what they think of cats..." Pausing as they struggled to grasp the sheer scope of a megapredator being just another one of their clanmates in the eyes of a tiny insect, it made their heart twist sorrowfully to think that bees had it so hard, being so small.
..Wait. Names and obstacles. Lamely, they made a haphazard reach to bridge their thoughts. "Maybe some fierce bees could be named after scary birds."

✧ ♬♩♡ ♪♩ Rookbriar ♩♪ ♡♩♬ ✧ Hmm, birds that ate bees...? There was her own namesake, robins, thrushes, swifts, martins, crows, ravens, jays... “Oh! Maybe that's how one of the bee warriors earns their name? Maybe one of the first few trees that was the right size for the Swarm turned out to be home to one of those birds! So the warrior managed to distract it so they and the Swarm could get away safely, and their leader named it after that? Flowerstar might be a good name for a leader.” She thought out loud with her head tilted, glancing at the clouds as if they offered the ideas the pair sought. “Cats don't usually attack bees, because they sting, so they're probably wary of us but I don't think we're their biggest concern.”That'd sort of make cats the bee equivalent of a twoleg, though cats didn't keep bees. How would that even work? Her mind began to veer off course, thinking about what all bees needed to live and how cats would go about providing that. Bees were hunted primarily by things cats considered prey, so they could protect them from birds, and if bees were protected from birds then they'd be able to make more honey, and if they made more honey then maybe there'd be plenty extra for medicine cats to use for medicine - but how would the bees know the cats were friendly? How would they keep from being stung? How would they even set up a home for the bees, when bees made their own homes the way cats weaved dens? Unless, they wove some sort of base for the hive to keep it safer - Rookbriar's little rabbit hole came to an abrupt stop as her gaze continued to lower in her thought, finally catching sight of Fawnheart. Oh yeah! “I think we're off to a good start!,” she chirped, diverting attention quickly. “What do you think?” She + Single + Lesbian + Queen

Rookbriar seemed to get lost for a moment, but it wasn't Fawnheart's place to judge. They'd had more than enough instances of drifting away into the clouds, even lacking the wings that would allow Sunswarm to fly so high. While she quieted after the explanation, he was left to consider the explanation. It was fairly aligned with warrior culture to earn your name through a feat of courage, even if these days, life was mundane enough to afford less specialized names. But that was fine; not every bee could be a hero, just like not every cat could force their place in history. The less danger there was to confront and challenge, the happier it was for cats like him and his current friend, who could afford the leisure time to lie around in the flowers and wonder what kind of things bees might name one another. Blinking at the sky, as if searching for where the exact spot that had whisked Rookbriar away from them, the warrior stretched his paws out, reaching up, up to the clouds like the white of his forelegs could mesh into them and take him wherever they might go next. To new worlds, like the world of Sunswarm or even just somewhere across the mountain pass. Somewhere that more stories could be found and told and reinvented. Softly, even after the queen seemed to crash land back into her body, Fawnheart agreed, "I think it's good, too. I like the name Flowerstar... Maybe we even met her, already, back there in the petals." It was a silly thought to have about a character they hadn't even finished making up yet, but it made it just as feasible. If Flowerstar weren't real in this world, then any bee could be Flowerstar if given the notice. With no way to prove otherwise, maybe they'd secretly crossed paths with a bee leader time and time again. "..Do you think... there are ways to interact with a bee without startling them? It may be fun if the kits had a visual example... but. I wouldn't want to scare them or the bee. Or, um. I don't know. Maybe there's a way to make.. an example somehow..." Something like the ways that leaves could represent enemy warriors, or the way that medicine cats could make meaning out of omens. Was there a word for that sort of thing? To make a placeholder item that symbolized something else, a shorthand for an unseen reality. Like shapes in the clouds, like the way meadow grass resembled whiskers... Could he somehow find a way to recreate a bee, using things like the yellow flowers? Maybe a thorn for a stinger.
It wasn't so easy to think of the rest. All the more reason a real, live bee would be better, but... they'd never seen a cat interact so closely with any animal but a twoleg. Could it even be done? Could a cat really befriend a bee, or at least walk alongside it for a little while?

✧ ♬♩♡ ♪♩ Rookbriar ♩♪ ♡♩♬ ✧ While she was glad to hear Fawnheart liked the name, she couldn't help but be taken a little aback by hearing him dip into thoughts she hadn't voiced. She hadn't voiced them, had she? Nonetheless, his questions made her beam. “I was just thinking about that, kinda,” Rookbriar chirped, looking over at the yellow flowers nearby. “Yellow flowers would probably do fine, but I can't help but wonder if there's a way cats can have some sort of friendly relationship with bees...? We can't understand each other, but... I mean, I hear some kittypets really like their twolegs, and they can't talk to each other. I wonder, if we could gather keep flowers somewhere, if we kept the flowers and bees safe... if they could come to some sort of understanding that we aren't a threat.”She paused. Yeah, that would take a while. “Of course, I don't really know how long that'd take, if it's even possible to begin with. I guess I just sort of like the idea of cats and bees having one less thing to be scared of.” With butterflies, she might be able to get one to perch on a single flower for long enough for her kits to see it, but... bees...? Bees were such busybodies, she couldn't rely on them to stay still long enough while they were so far from the hive - and to be close to the hive? It was a little dangerous, especially for kits. A frustrating reality, but she wondered nonetheless. “Well, they're pretty big now, I wonder if we'd be able to bring them out here for just a little bit to hear the story. They'd probably get to see some from a distance, but I think Rootkit would be scared all the same.” Hmm. She didn't vocalize it, but she did worry some of her kits might give chase to the little bugs. It wouldn't do to have three kits with stingers in their paws, for a number of reasons. “We might want to stick to a flower or some other... stand in,” she concluded. She + Single + Lesbian + Queen

Leafkit's smart, Rootkit's sensitive. With another bit of trivia to add to the start of a very small pile, they focused back on Rookbriar's musings. "Oh.." It felt like they'd gone through a whole spectrum of ideas, from bringing the bees to camp, to bringing the kits to the bees, to replacing the bees entirely again as he'd suggested just prior. If it circles back, does that mean it's the best idea? For something that was the safest and maybe best idea, it was still a little disappointing. Although it wasn't an endeavor that their leader would necessarily condone, with there being little benefit for the clan involved, there was something nice about the thought of having an alliance with the bees. If anyone should befriend Sunswarm, it should be Sunclan, after all. Sharing a territory with other animals... well, it was a given. But when it came to animals they didn't prey on, maybe it'd be nice to better understand those sort of neutral neighbors, even if it didn't directly offer them any given advantage. Not everything had to have an advantage to be worthwhile. "Hm.." Blinking slow and steady at the very flowers surrounding them, almost towering now that they'd laid down at ground level with them, Fawnheart reached out to bat at the head of a nearby corolla. "If that's the case... should we try to collect materials while we're here? To, um. Make a practice bee?" Paw folding back inwards, tucked safe among his chest fluff, they added, "We don't have to, though. It's cozy... so I don't mind staying like this. However long, I mean." If they didn't have to pretend to be a warrior every now and then, they could probably lie out here under the clouds and among the blossoms for days and days, if it meant soaking in the same sun and water that made plants so bright and lively. Maybe he could learn a thing or two.

It was a sort of sad thought that she hadn’t even realized she’d even worried about, and it surprised her. That’s not true, she insisted to herself before following Fawnheart’s lead and pawing at a nearby flower stem, lingering slightly to admire its little details. “A practice bee would be a good idea. I’ve made little playthings out of feathers and stuff, but I’ve never tried to make them resemble anything. It might not have to look like a bee per se, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try to make it a nice stand in, right?” She mulled it over, sifting her thoughts for what exactly they’d even do too a flower to make it into a practice bee. “… I think one day I’ll try to make friends with bees properly. I know that doesn’t help us right now, but… I can’t help but things would be all the easier if bees could recognize that we weren’t a threat, and in turn we’d be less worried about being stung. Medicine cats use honey for things, I just wish we could ask for it instead of however it is that they get ahold of it.”She bat gently at the flower again. Hm, yeah, that was fun. Gentle swats only, as she wouldn’t want to hurt it, but watching it bob up and down humored her more than it should’ve. “Would we want a really little flower? Since bees are little? Fawnheart fell quiet again for a beat, although not in the awkward way he was accustomed to shutting up and letting other cats do the talking. It was a comfortable silence, where they merely listened rather than being stifled. As he listened, he wondered if there were other cats as brave as Rookbriar, so capable of just saying anything that came to mind and somehow making it seem within the realm of possibility. Maybe it didn't even have to stop with bees; if cats could communicate alliance with something as different from them as a bug, what other animals could join a similar understanding? The snapping jaws of a fox were the same ones Rookbriar had seen carrying kits, playing and feeding family. Maybe the same went for dogs or badgers. Out here, where no animal had dominance over another like the encroaching, unstoppable advances of twolegs, maybe understanding one another wasn't as hard as it seemed. In this microcosm of connection between them and the pointed queen, perhaps there lay a seed for something far bigger than the two of them could even comprehend. Something as big as the stars.
..But for now, all that big stuff wouldn't fit in the head of such small kittens. It gave him the instinctual response to shoot for realism, for a tiny flower on scale with a bee, and yet. Something about the way she stated the capacity for empathy struck him more deeply. "I think.. a bigger flower is good, then. Because. We miss things when they're small. That's.. how I never noticed bees very much. Except when they flew at me.. So a big bee will help them look out for little bees in real life." Then, stretching a white paw above him bashfully, they also added: "..And, um. My paws might fumble with tiny petals, anyway." It wasn't like they'd had the training of a medic to prepare them for precise, particular motions. Working with something dwarfed by their pads would just as soon render it crushed beneath his uncertain, unpracticed grasp. It'd be easier to tinker with the details of a model if it were large enough to be modified without risking damage. Moreover, large enough to be handled in the first place. Smaller pieces made for a more fragile product.

It was, though, wasn’t it? The opinions of a friend? Knowing the thoughts and feelings of a loved one was important, and it was all the more important to make them know that. “That’s a good point, I hadn’t thought of that! Our poor little bee needs to be sturdy, it’s a warrior after all, right? I don’t think I could manage anything that little, either, anyhow,” she responded, pondering that last point slightly. Was it possible at all? It might be a fun challenge to build up to, but for the sake of something her kits would be able to take care of, it was better to do the bigger option. “I wonder if we could give the bee some sort of… miniature den. I know that’s probably too much, but it might be cute to have a little spot for the bee to sleep at night, too,” she mused with her eyes closed. Well, she’d never been nimble pawed enough to make the dens in camp pretty. The toy she’d made her kits before was more concerned with being fun. It just needed to hold against being batted about. It was gone by now, and it hadn’t been very skillfully crafted. Then again, it hadn’t been meant to be any specific shape, either. A little den for their flower bee sounded difficult, but… maybe another fun future project. They’d have to see how the flower went, first. She + Single + Lesbian + Queen
