ROOKBRIAR Her conversation with Fawnheart in camp had come as a breath of fresh air, and now, days later, she inhales too deeply as the pair are officially out of view of the camp. Her kits are being watched over, and she knows they’re in good paws - she wouldn’t dare move a whisker out of the nursery if she didn’t. She’s already promised them to do something fun just to remind them that she loved them even if she wasn’t there physically. Now Rookbriar is free to feel all the enthusiasm in the world over her little walk with Fawnheart. It’s still dawn, so the sun’s fury isn’t in full swing. The temperature is reasonable for green-leaf, and so she had been adamant about going out for their promised walk. Rookbriar gently bumps her shoulder against his, humming playfully with as she walks with wide eyes, taking in the forest around them. With no warning, she bounds forward and stops dead in her tracks. “Fawnheart, look!,” she calls, not taking her eyes off of her newfound prize. Two separate flowers were growing, intertwining with one another, seemingly using each other to support their growth. As if they relied on one another to keep them up towards the sun. She marvels at this, examining the pair from multiple angles. “Isn’t this incredible? Do you think someone did this on purpose, or do you think they did it on their own?” She has her own inclination, of course - more of a hope than a genuine theory, but that’s enough for her. It’s like tactile hope, as far as she’s concerned, and she wiggles with enthusiasm as she waits patiently to see what Fawnheart makes of it. It’s small, sure, but it makes her happy - hopefully seeing her enthusiasm in full swing isn’t a deterrent for him. Then again, she knows Tinyleaf isn’t exactly the calmest cat in the Clan. Surely, Fawnheart will be able to see the beauty, or at least understand her reaction to some extent. Approval is only in the back of her mind, of course, the front is spinning with the possibilities of what else they might see on this walk. Fawnheart

It was nice out, and far from the first greenleaf Fawnheart had taken a walk just to take a walk... but certainly the first time they felt themselves truly paying attention to the atmosphere of everything. Truly letting himself take in the details, without a job to do or a brother to keep tabs on. Instead, there were other things to notice; the brush of Rookbriar's pelt, her resounding hum with seemed to fuse with the droning cries of cicadas somewhere in the trees. The swell of the sun, the floral scents in the air from warm seasoned plants making their big debuts. Things he'd probably always been able to notice before, but things they were trying extra hard to appreciate after the extent of their chat with the cat beside them at this very moment. To see the world like Rookbriar might.
Suddenly, it appeared an opportunity had arisen for that very goal to be achieved, marked by the rush of the pointed queen off to a random patch of greenery. Feeling strangely returned to his kithood, rushing around on someone's tail as they made for the nearest stimulus, Fawnheart couldn't help the wistful smile that came along with the nostalgia. A smile that only grew with his surprised gasp upon encountering the subject of Rookbriar's fascination- a beautiful set of flowers, posed like a singular being in spite of their separate origins. "O-Oh my goodness... I don't think I've ever seen this before..." Granted, there was a very real possibility that he'd simply passed over the blossoms like he would have any other little flower. It was hard not to, when there was so much you were expected to do with your day as a warrior... It nearly elicited some sorrow, thinking he could've missed it so easily and never gotten the chance to see, had it not been for his partner. But- No! Rather than being sad he'd never noticed such things before, it was more important to be grateful for the fact that he'd dodged that fate! With a friend's help, no less.
..It still didn't get any less nice to think about that last bit, the fact that he was out with someone who so readily recruited them into companionship. An easy, casual bond that didn't make demands, didn't ask questions that complicated things. Something they hadn't experienced much outside of...
Well. Tinyleaf would like this flower, too, now that he was really looking at it. Fawnheart's brain couldn't help but be reminded of his brother, especially looking at these two little flowers who'd grown up to nurture one another. "I... don't know a lot about plants. But, I think... it's probably just how they are! Because, if cats can stay together, why not flowers?" Swaying a little on their paws, they blinked thoughtfully before inserting a sheepish disclaimer- "There's probably some sort of explanation for it. But, ah- I think it'd be way too much trouble to set up. I think... maybe they're friends, or clanmates in a way. In the way flowers can be. Normally, you see weeds and vines choke other plants out... but they're not hurting each other, so they must be like this for their own reason!" It was too easy to suddenly see identity in the twin blooms, to characterize them as he would another cat or even another animal. But then, who was to say flowers couldn't have their own characters? There was a whole world of life out there that cats weren't privy to, and if Starclan were real and thriving, then Fawnheart believed it best to keep their mind open to any possibility.

✧ ♬♩♡ ♪♩ Rookbriar ♩♪ ♡♩♬ ✧ Relieved and overjoyed in equal parts, Rookbriar nods along enthusiastically. “Mhm, I think so too! If plants live and die like us, why can’t they have bonds with each other too? These ones especially! They care so much and support each other!” She sighs dreamily, tilting her head with admiration for the flowers that have made such a statement without even trying. “It reminds me of the time I found a tortoise upside down. I watched for a little bit while another one tried to set it upright - in the end, I helped it myself but I was so amazed watching such kindness from animals that should’ve been competing. The world is so full of pretty little moments like that, I think.” She takes a deep breath, taking a few peaceful seconds to appreciate the flowery aroma that hangs in the air. She turns to them and chirps. “We’ve already gotten so lucky today! The forest is full of music, the plants are full of love and blooms, and we get to spend time together! I’m so glad you agreed to come along!” If there was one thing that Rookbriar had an endless supply of, it was joy. Everything had the potential for happiness with her, and that only makes the truly happy moments all the more special for her. She’s not having to play a game of “at least”s with herself to remind herself that something bad is all part of the cycle of life, all she has to do now is keep her eyes and ears open. And her heart. And her nose. Her mind, really. She just hopes it doesn’t overwhelm Fawnheart, but on that front they seem to be doing well so far. That’s just even happier! She thinks again to his words and ponders for a moment. “Do you think plants have their own territory disputes? They don’t know they’re in SunClan territory, of course, but maybe they’ve got their own divisions. Sort of makes you wonder how many different territories we might cross without knowing. There’s probably some other animal that has territory that spans both Clans, but that just… doesn’t mean anything for us. That’s kinda weird, huh? But I think it’s okay if that’s the case, it’s just a reminder that we live in a world of possibility - that means there’s always hope! Even when you aren’t looking for it!” She + Single + Lesbian + Queen

Fawnheart experienced some relief of their own, glad that despite being asked directly for their opinion, it hadn't been a mere courtesy call. Rather, his clanmate was more than happy to not only humor him, but expand on their mutual belief... Pleased to have meet a like-minded cat, he crouched for just a moment to touch each flower with the tip of his pink nose, bidding a silent blessing. The least they could do after verbally acknowledging the flowers as potentially sentient, even if not in the same way as himself and Rookbriar. Drifting his attention back to the warrior in question, he sent her an admiring smile as she recounted the tale of helping a poor tortoise. It wasn't something many cats would stop for- if anything, they'd see it as a shot at an easy kill, an interesting prey to bring back should they catch the poor beast before it retreated into its shell. But not her. Does that kind of empathy come naturally? I'm so curious...Eyeing his paws now, wanting to be more self aware of little plants and animals in need or otherwise just trying to get by, they took a little step back from the flowers so as to avoid accidentally shifting on top of them. Then, they tilted their head back, blinking at the branches above thoughtfully as Rookbriar's question sunk in. "I think you're right. I.. actually thought a little about that myself, after the fox attack. Um- Not that it excuses violence against the clan, but... I remember thinking, even at the time, that I wish we could understand other animals sometimes. Because... maybe the foxes had just been confused in their own way, not knowing who we were or why we lived here. Or, even maybe they needed a place to live, and since there was no way to communicate, they tried to hurt us." They got a little lost in the memory, face crinkling grimly as they recalled the chaos of that unfortunate morning.
"..I guess. I just realized that they may have things they want, too. But we don't understand foxes, and they don't understand us. It's... a more extreme example, but that got me realizing all the things you mentioned. That there's a ton of worlds out there we can never see." Their expression smoothed out again as their gaze dropped away from the sky, back to the world as it was levelled in front of him. "Sunclan is just one thing in a big... thing. So I think you're right. There's.. probably a lot of things out there. And, that means plenty good things, too. Like your flowers, Rookbriar. And the tortoise!"

✧ ♬♩♡ ♪♩ Rookbriar ♩♪ ♡♩♬ ✧ Rookbriar nodded enthusiastically along as Fawnheart spoke. That morning had been frightening, of course, not only were foxes attacking their camp, but her kits hadn’t been born at that time. Few fears compared to that that she felt for her kits, even before they were born. Afterwards, though, she had thought about it incessantly. “I’ve thought about that too! It was terrible, obviously, but I can’t help but wonder if it could really be all that different than ambushing a hare in its burrow. Maybe they didn’t like us being in their territory, maybe they were hungry, or maybe like you said, they wanted their own place to live! There’s so much possibility in the world, it makes my head spin sometimes.” For emphasis on that last part, she paced in a circle, quicker and quicker until she was dizzy. She laughed. “Honestly, though, as… frustrating and confusing as it can be, it’s kind of relieving, you know? We don’t have to know everything - wecan’t know everything! While that can lead us to trouble, it can just as easily lead us to wonderful things, even if we don’t understand them - exactly like those flower!” She sat down, waiting for the dizziness to wear off, then shook the remains of it out. Her smile softened awkwardly as she just happened to glance in the direction of their border with MoonClan. Another thing they didn’t quite understand, as SunClan cats, but… they weren’t all that different, right? If they could be alike plants, there was no reason they couldn’t be alike other cats. Ah, but that was sort of a bummer. She turned her attention back to Fawnheart and gestured at the expanse before them, gaze no longer far away. “You wanna keep moving, or do you want to stick around our little flower friends a little longer? Where we are doesn’t matter, so long as we’re enjoying ourselves and each other!” She + Single + Lesbian + Queen

Hearing the same story from Rookbriar's perspective was another relief, another instance of Fawnheart's presumed oddness being not so odd after all. From a strictly parental stance, they'd thought it natural to assume the only thing on an expecting mother's mind would be the safety of her kits, not emphasizing with the thread after the fact. It was just another way that she blew his expectations out of the water, made him wonder how much he'd misunderstood about his clanmates up until recently. It seemed at every turn, Rookbriar was full of internal and external surprises, be it noticing the unnoticed or thinking outside the box in ways unconventional to clan culture. It was... nice.
Moreover, it made them all the more eager to see how else they could be surprised, with so much more of the day left ahead. As much as they liked the flowers, at the very least they were so close to camp that it'd be easy to return to them and reexamine them should Fawnheart wish to do so. After watching Rookbriar circle around and around, head tracking her motions until he started to get a little dizzy himself, Fawnheart shook out his ears with a soft snort, settling the spinning of their head before reconnecting with the other. "I don't mind staying to enjoy them more." Ah, but... honesty. Remembering how to be more proactive, they volunteered an expansion of the statement, albeit sound more like a question than an offer: "But... if you feel ready to go, I'm.. okay doing that, too? To look at more things, maybe. It's your walk, though. So you should do what you want, since you don't get to walk out as much..." That was another good point. They didn't want to be inattentive to the queen's own needs, not when this outing was such a recent rarity for her.
He just hadn't been able to miss that instance of distance on her face, as fleeting as it'd been. Unsure where it'd come from, he hoped that perhaps moving on would take her mind off whatever had dulled her mood just then.

✧ ♬♩♡ ♪♩ Rookbriar ♩♪ ♡♩♬ ✧ Well, she couldn’t very well argue that point. She hadn’t thought about it, but Fawnheart had a point - it didn’t stop her from looking stunned for a brief few moments. It didn’t take long for her to recover - it rarely did. Rookbriar simply returned to her natural state of beaming. “I hadn’t thought about that! That’s a good point - and they’re close to camp anyway, right? It won’t be hard to find them again now that we’ve noticed them! We can appreciate them almost any time that we want!” She nodded, gesturing forward, away from camp. “Well, I guess since that’s settled, let’s see what else we can find! Green-leaf is fun because I often find bees so full of nectar, they have to take naps in the flowers! Maybe we’ll see some!”She giggled as she thought about the sight, industrious little creatures that she didn’t understand remotely, all worn out and full and needing a nap. It was just like they’d said earlier, there were so many worlds they didn’t understand, and so much potential for things to be like them. Bees were probably the perfect example, what with all the work they put into making their honey and their loyalty to their hive. “I wonder if in bee language, instead of having SunClan they’d have, like… SunHive. SunSwarm?” Those names sort of sounded like warrior names to her, but she couldn’t help but ponder aloud as she let her paws move of their own accord. They often had a better sense for finding things than she did, anyway. “Hives are where they live, and we aren’t SunCamp or anything like that, so maybe it would be SunSwarm. I wonder if any of their names involve cats like ours involve bees…” It was all hypothetical, but they might make for fun stories to make up for kits. It also didn’t stop her from thinking about it. "Ooh.." Fawnheart breathed out with fascination, eyes widening as he hurried after Rookbriar. Bees taking naps? That was something he wasn't sure he'd ever noticed before, either. Honestly, when they'd seen bees around during their apprenticeship, they usually just rushed away out of fear of being stung, not realizing until much later in life that most bees wouldn't actually sting without provocation. Since then, he made himself scarce solely for the purpose of maintaining a peace treaty between himself and the little insects... but here Rookbriar was describing something so catlike, so natural to the living experience, that it kind of made him realize that even bees could be similar to a Sunclan warrior. That theme of broad thinking, of understanding the incomprehensible, just kept reoccurring!
Padding to her side, Fawnheart thought hard about the propositions, taking them as seriously as one would an omen from Starclan. "I guess... if you try to think about bee names, then you also have to think to the core principle. Like, ah... do bees have language? Do bees talk like a cat? Or..." Their brow knit slightly, the scope of the subject becoming more ambitious than they'd originally realized when they dipped their toes in. "Well. Bees buzz a lot... But I don't hear much else, not like all the sounds we make. So maybe bees talk, but more simply than we do. Or... maybe they don't need to talk, and they just get along like flowers. Maybe the word is. Communication? Oh..." They were rational questions to ask, but quickly spiralled out of control. The patched warrior shook his head as if to clear it, twitched their ears as if dislodging water.
"Well. I guess bees are actually just as complicated as we are, when I think about it. So maybe SunSwarm is real and waiting for us." A much happier thought, eliminating Fawnheart's wondrous rabbit hole about the nitty gritty details. "I feel like they might have a lot of words and names about flowers, though, since that's what they like most!"

She sometimes wondered if her parents knew she’d talk like a bird when they gave her her name. “Bee language is probably just really different than cat, maybe they can tell the difference between the buzzes.” She tucked this information away privately, making a note to herself about SunSwarm and their buzzy culture full of flowers and honey in a playful imaginary world, just for her kits to experience. As much as she loved her kits, though, she didn’t want it to overshadow the moment she was sharing with Fawnheart. She didn’t worry about it too much, though, the birdsongs of green-leaf caught her ears and kept her in place in momentary peace. A song that illuminated her heart since she was a kit. Well, truthfully, it was more accurate to say many songs. All the same, she let the song guide her paws, humming her best approximation of the tunes that floated through the air. … Hopefully that wasn’t rude to them. “Flowers might be one of the things I like most, too,” she declared, her eyes catching the various shades of petals. “They’re sort of like if birds’ songs could grow out of the dirt, you know?” She + Single + Lesbian + Queen

Fawnheart nodded along to Rookbriar's idea- after all, cats understood each other because they knew themselves. It'd probably be the same as a bee. When you're born as something, that's just what you are, and that's what you'd understand. Or something. They started to get that spiralling, overly complicated feeling again, and as such didn't protest when his companion decided to change topics to something more lighthearted. Flowers, just like the ones they'd met so recently! It was easy to take them for granted, when you lived among them your entire life. For Fawnheart, things like flowers and green leaves were as constant as the sun and moon, albeit held to seasonal limitations. Even so, they were just part of his surroundings, nothing more meaningful than the moss in his bed or the walls around the camp. At least, not meaningful until now, of course. Now, everything felt so detailed, so in focus. They felt their whole body prickle with hyperawareness, suddenly noticing the texture of the grass and grit beneath their paws as they stepped. Had it always been so prominent? How did you lose sense of things so completely? Rookbriar's musical voice caught their attention where it had been on his paws, causing him to pull back his gaze and refocus on the question at hand- although he couldn't help but note how easily he lost the intensity of feeling in his steps as he did shift gears. Being alive could be so weird... What else was weird was trying to conceptualize a connection between sound and visuals, although they certainly made an effort as they thought about Rookbriar's simile with a quirk of introspection to his mouth. "Bird's song.. you mean, the brightness?" It was a vague equation, applying the idea of brightness and color to something intangible. But somehow, it did sort of make sense. "That would mean the ground is singing, then. Singing with the birds, but without making a sound, so it just pushes up flowers, maybe. And then takes a nap in the winter..." How far they'd come to start talking about the character of the earth itself! But somehow, it was almost a comforting thought, to consider the very landscape he walked on to be alive with all that inhabited it. It was a kind thought.
He decided to put his paws down a little more gently.

The muffled sound it leant everything made her ears twitch with some sort of epiphany. It was obvious, of course, that everything came together one way or another, but to hear it from the earth as all the sounds muffled into one… It was a new experience entirely. She lifted her head and glanced around at the world around them. All the beauty that they saw, could it really be the earth’s own song? That idea was magical to her. The bird song transformed from simple pretty sounds and the birds’ own expression to something more… encapsulating. Like a way to let all that beauty that they witnessed every day for all of their lives escape their little bodies with the very air that they breathed, returning the beauty in the process of celebrating it. Why didn’t cats do that? “I wish we were birds,” she stated with little a thought as to how it sounded. “I think I’d like to sing with the world,, too, and give it my own song in turn. It’s just… such a beautiful thought. Midwalk, Rookbriar made the move to lay down, leaving Fawnheart's pawsteps stuttering to stop alongside her, not expecting the halt. They blinked down at the seal fur now bunched into a crouch at his forelegs, not understanding at the first glance what she was doing down there... Then, like having an epiphany of his own, his eyes widened in understanding a mere instant before she was back on her paws, gifting him a pleasant nudge and a pleasant piece of her mind. It was strange- he'd been raised, like all other warriors, to view the purpose of life as servitude. To live one's life for another, to give all you got, and then to die grateful for your company. In a way, those sentiments still rang true, but Rookbriar's narrative opened up a new path. A story not of giving your heart away until you had nothing left to give, but to exist on the endless charity of the world itself, something that neither ran dry nor expected payment for its kindness.
"Oh.. I never really thought about any of that either, until now." They almost felt like protesting. After all, it was their clanmate who had taken his single seed of thought and grown it into something so much bigger and brighter. And yet... they dipped their head shyly, accepting the kind words regardless of whether or not he'd actually meant to inspire Rookbriar so much. At the very least, he'd been a catalyst for that inspiration, and that much was something worth being happy about. "I'm happy." Ah! That much he hadn't meant to say aloud. Fawnheart didn't often speak even the words they meant to say, which made that slip of the mind all the more uncharacteristic, surprising even themselves. Ears warming, they kept their head ducked as he clamped his muzzle shut to relocate his usual silence. Was magic making him sing, too?
"Um. Even though we're just two cats, I'm still happy.." They mumbled a recontextualization, ginger ears twitching the heat away. "It's because we are who we are, right now in this moment and space, that we can have this conversation. So even if we can't be birds, I still think things... are going good. Maybe we can still dream about it."

Fawnheart, still doing their best to be active and in the moment, couldn't help but fall back into timidness with all the affection being directed his way- It was a peaceful timidness, composed of positive feelings, but one that silenced him as he attempted to deal with the sheer overflow of kindness from Rookbriar. It's not like cats weren't nice to him; More often than not, his clanmates could be nearly too nice, tiptoeing around him as if they'd break under any undue pressure. But that's what was different. Out here, with a friend who seemed to genuinely like being around him, that kindness was meaningful and personal. It was a direct product of his presence in her life, and it was more than a little flustering. Outside of direct family, they'd simply never dealt with an open heart like Rookbriar's.
Still feeling warm and fuzzy on the shoulder that'd been touched, Fawnheart dwindled along after the point, eventually picking up her habit of sniffing around at nearby petals, although he felt a little anxious each time. After all, as much as he was aware they were looking for bees, peeking into the rim of each flower felt like waiting for a jumpscare- a bee who might wake up startled and fly at their nose! But with their clanmate being so brave, Fawnheart tried hard to overcome that fear as well, and persisted in examining the forest flora.
"Um." They finally dared to broach conversation again, having recovered enough composure to try and contribute to the walk as they had before. "Are there any particular flowers that are more likely to have bees? I'm not very experienced, so I don't know if I'm looking in the right spots... Oh- I know you're doing most of the searching, I'm just trying to help."

When I first started paying attention to the bees, I used to end up hiding a lot because I was scared of them. I’ve gotten way better about it!”They neared the meadow, Rookbriar’s master plan. There were flowers all over, and they could easily grow in patches due to the sunlight. The perfect place to look for bees and butterflies - even hummingbirds! “When I was an apprentice, I used to come here to chase dragonflies all the time. I pounced right into a patch of poppies, one time, and I probably could’ve stayed there all day if my mentor hadn’t come to get me!” She laughed with the memory, letting the sight of a patch of blue drag her towards it, like she herself was a bee. Thinking about the list she’d just given them, she paused her laughter. “Oh! Don’t worry, though, I got lucky enough not to pounce myself right into a bee. I would’ve run straight to camp if I had!” She + Single + Lesbian + Queen
