FOXLILY She stared skeptically at the water before her, a part of their brain regretting their leaf-bare words. Surely, she didn’t fall into the water that often? Still, she knew she’d both agreed to this situation and caused it. Foxlily would merely have to accept the consequences of her actions. Nonetheless, observed the water tentatively, tapping it with her paw before turning to face Pansystar, coat ruffled. “Are we sure this is absolutely necessary? I haven’t drowned yet,” she joked - mostly. What possessed them to live among floods, she might never know. Or, perhaps it had to do with that whole thing about the river having changed from when MoonClan and SunClan’s mutual ancestors had initially begun living in the area. In any case. They took a few cautious steps into the water, just getting accustomed to the sensation. Not as if they’d never done this, but something about this seemed much more grandiose than any purpose she’d previously had with water. “Oh, are you one of those cats that enjoys taking a swim, for fun or to relax? I know Daisyfire swims quite often, but that’s because of her joint-aches. It’s strange how something so dangerous can be so helpful, isn’t it?” Pansystar |

PANSYSTAR It was hard to believe that any MoonClan cat was a poor swimmer. It was part of a MoonClan cat's lifestyle to deal with water. The wetlands occupied so much of their territory and pairing that with the yearly flooding meant a MoonClan cat needed to be able to get their paws wet. "Yes, Foxlily, I'm positive this is necessary. You're lucky not to have drowned." Pansystar said the last sentence with a chuckle, but she wasn't entirely joking. It wasn't unheard of for cats to go missing in the floodwaters. That'd be just awful. I can't imagine what I'd, what MoonClan, would do without Foxlily.
Foxlily went on about the water's properties, and Pansystar shook her head in response. "It doesn't have to be too dangerous. That's what this is for." The brown molly soon followed them into the water, letting it soak into her tabby pelt. "You know how to swim a bit, right? Where should we start?" template created by sunni |

｡☆✼★━━━━ Foxlily ━━━━★✼☆｡ “Don’t worry, I count my lucky stars every time we make it to the new camp,” they mused to match the tone of Pansystar’s joke. They thought and reflected on Pansystar’s question for a brief moment, counted down by the swishing of their tail, trying to give their best answer to the question. It wasn’t an interrogation by any means, it was a simply question, but truth be told, she just hadn’t thought about what this all would entail. “Honestly, the only time I don’t seem to have a water issue is the flood,” Foxlily finally answered with deep thought. “I think, maybe, that in the moment I’m worried about the Clan and the future, and instinct takes over, maybe. When I’m on my own, though, I just sort of panic. So maybe it’s about the suddenness of entering the water?” This theory also made sense to her because of the time she’d crossed the border while lost in thought, but if Pansystar didn’t already know about that, then Foxlily felt no need to tell her. |

PANSYSTAR So do I just shove her then? Pansystar couldn't really image something more sudden then that. Lots of cats thrived in a trial by fire, or, water, in this case. But Pansystar couldn't imagine doing something to mean to Foxlily.
"Well, then, let's start from square one." Pansystar swam out about a foxlength. Her paws would barely graze the stones at the bottom of the river. ｡☆✼★━━━━ Foxlily ━━━━★✼☆｡ The simple command took Foxlily aback - namely the instructions. Let it help? A somewhat baffling notion. They took a deep breath and tried to let muscle memory guide them, pushing water with her legs to push them forward - only to have panic set in when she felt their paws off the rocks below. She yelped in panic, starting to backpedal before she realized that she still hadn't gotten very far off, still able to stand if only barely. In typical Foxlily fashion, she could only laugh about having been spooked so easily. “Sorry, sorry, false alarm! How do you keep calm when you can't feel the ground beneath you? I feel like the water just wants to swallow me whole,” she mused as they tried to calm their own nerves. |

PANSYSTAR Pansystar instinctively dove forward when she saw Foxlily panic, but the medicine cat seemed to find their footing quickly. "You're okay!" she responded to the comment about sharing her. They did, but they were okay and that was what mattered. Pansystar decided she'd swim about half the space between Foxlily and herself, just in case. "It can be scary at first, but you get used to the feeling." She wasn't sure how exactly to explain it to the medicine cat. "If it's any comfort, you can't fall while you're in the water like you can on rocks or trees. The water surrounds you, but once you've got your paddle down, you should stay well on top of it."Not feeling like a great teacher, Pansystar held Foxlily's gaze. "I'm close now. Try again. No rush. ｡☆✼★━━━━ Foxlily ━━━━★✼☆｡ They reflected on Pansystar's words. It was true, the whole point of learning to swim was to stay on top of the water. If she felt herself falling, she just had to fix her paddle - it wasn't as if the water beneath her was terribly different than the space she occupied right now, after all. Sure, water could be complicated, but at this part of the river they were safe. They gave Pansystar a nod of understanding, and took a deep breath before lifting their paws off the rocks below. Pansystar's steady gaze was soothing for Foxlily - not only did that mean there was another cat to back her up should something go wrong, but it was a cat she trusted. They didn't trust many cats the way they trusted Pansystar. Not to say they didn't trust the rest of MoonClan, but Pansystar was different. Being so focused on wanting to show just how much she trusted her, Foxlily didn't even register the weightless feeling until she had closed most of the distance between themselves. It did surprise them for a brief second, feeling as if they'd lost their footing, but they righted themself before they could even acknowledge it verbally. She beamed at Pansystar. “I did it!” |
